Right now in my Law class we are talking about Euthanasia, and the Law which involves it. We have viewed a couple of cases so far, where Euthanasia has been the main thing. Such as Sue Rodriguez, who was a woman who was very, very ill and was unable to commit suicide. She wanted to die, she was unhappy with living. Her case was taken eventually to the Supreme Court of Canada where she was denied the right to die, a 5-4 split. Later an unknown physician did the job for her.
Another case which involved a man, I forget his name, killed his 12 year old daughter. He did it out of love though. His daughter was diagnosed with a very painful and extreme case of CP. She was in pain all the time, and it just continued to become worse. Finally, I believe he became fed up and decided she shouldn't have to be put through the pain of living. He put her in the back seat of his truck and pumped carbon minoxide into it. He was charged with 2nd degree murder and was imprisoned with life without parole until 10 years had passed. He just got out on parol last year.
I am personally 100% for it. I believe if a person feels that they want to end their life that the Government, nor anyone else should have the right to prevent that person from doing so. Not everyone should have to live in pain and anguish and noone has a right to say otherwise. It's not their choice. The same goes for families who have a very ill family member. I believe if there is nothing more they can do for said person, and that person is unable to make a decision for themselves that the family should have that choice to put an end to their life. I am in no way saying that this should be done lightly, or to any little problem. I'm saying that if the conditions are right they should be able to make this choice. This is all I will say for now, but I am certainly up for a friendly debate or adding to what I believe and why. I would certainly like to hear what others have to say.
If you want try to find their cases, (sorry I can't remember the name of the guy from the second one, if I saw it I would remember) I definitely suggest you look them up. There is definitely lots on both.
The question is what do you think about Euthanasia? Is it right in your opinon, or do you think it is morally wrong? Do you think that it should be legalized or stay illegal? Answer and explain, I think this could become a neat topic for conversation.
