Okay. I want this more based off of the sensation of speed then numerical speed.

Having played all the above mentioned games except for Pole Position; I'll cast my vote on Ballistics for PC/Linux and Arcade. No player in the world has reached the absolute maximum speed allowed by the game. To do so would require frequent booster refills and a straight course with no obstacles. Some players have reached speeds just over 6000km/h, though. The game doesn't need to rely on motion blur effects to give you a sense of speed. The game is fast enough to be nothing but a blur without any shader usage.

I'm going for burnout. Primarily because I only know that and Wipeout, which has so many twists and turns that the speed is lost a little. Burnout Revenge on the other hand still allows for that sensation of speed where you can only just make out what's ahead on the track. Before ploughing into it.

Wipeout 2097 on Phantom.

You cannot play that game without knowing the track off by heart, human reactions are simply not fast enough to make the turns.

Although if you want want fastest speed attained without cheats, Gran Turismo 3/4 has had some players hit nearing 30000kph. Admitedly it needs a glitch, but it's still part of the game.

I expected most people to go with WipeOut. :D

I just thought about Track Mania tracks, but at Ballistics speeds... Not pretty.

It was a toss-up between F-Zero and Burnout. In the end I had to hand it to Burnout (3: Takedown), just for the pure awesome crashes (due to "Oh my God, I can't see a thing at these speeds. Is that a turn, or a truck coming straight at me?" *CRASH*)

Not on the list but the fastest I've ever played is Extreme-G 3 on the Gamecube. Once you reach the 1000G class it becomes absurdly difficult and hard to control.

Extreme-G 3. Definitely up there, forgot about that series entirely. Still not as fast as Ballistics though. :)

None of these

There was a game called Big Rigs something that allowed the trucks to accelerate indefenitly
Maybe I should've added a whole "By design" part. :O

The best gameplay footage I could find on youtube for Ballistics. It's so damn hard to see what's going on. It must also be noted that to reach the top speeds in Ballistics, you need to play it on Ballistics difficulty which is what the video shows us.

While Wipeout (or F-Zero, or Extreme-G) CAN be faster, the purest sensation of speed comes from Burnout 3 and 4, thanks to having not only wide open courses (galletea already mentioned the loss of speed in WipeOut due to the courses), but at the same time also multiple obstacles in form of oncoming traffic.

F-Zero may be faster, but you feel much more speedy when driving at still ludicrous speeds, tightly zipping past pedestrian traffic that could blow your car into pieces

This video isn't as fast as the first one I showed, but it's of decent quality and you can actually see what's going on. I don't think this is on Ballistic difficulty. Probably Pro.

Extreme-G I think. It's been a long time since I played it, but I remember the perception of intense speed.

F zero was technically fastest I believe, but I'm getting quite a rush off of GRID at the moment. Burnout 3 and Revenge too also give a speed feel where it feels like "Should i really be going this fast?

Wiepout is my favorite racing game ever so my vote goes to it. It most likely is not the fastest game ever but damn it gives you a good balance of neack breaking speeds and skill. With all it's twists and turns you really feel that speed when you crash into something at 700mph lol. Playing wiepout pulse on phantom speed on some of the tracks is insane.

I used to love WipeOut 2097, but many moons ago I had a game on the C64 that went by the name of Turbo Charge. It was something of a Chase HQ clone (speeding after bad guys and shooting them with car mounted guns and rockets) and it was insanely fast. I could perfect lap Wipeout 2097 on Phantom with the Pirhana, but I never finished Turbo Charge.

What (if any) insanely fast racing games are still out there for pc?
