Easy-Hard.

Dependant on the game or genre really. If it's a shooter, I could mow it down on hard in a heartbeat. A game like Prototype on the other hand I want to have fun with, so I'll put it on easy so I won't get my ass kicked too fast while I'm slaughtering armies of soldiers.

That's rather closed minded. What about driving games like Forza? Or many of the live arcade games we see about?
Don't get me wrong, I love the Forza series of games, and PGR, and DiRT, but I see them for what they are, fun, not meant to engage the mind on any higher than the level of mental agility, games like counter strike and quake 3 arena on the other hand, games with an appropriate medium for story, which then fail to deliver, do not entertain me, there are no interesting characters, there is no motivation, it is just the mindless killing that FOX news harps on about all the time.

some XBLA titles are really entertaining, i have played 'splosion man, Castle Crashers and some others and freaking loved them, but they all had a decent story, so lets go for one that doesn't, an indie game, Avatar drop, I played it, I loved it, I play it with my family on their living room 360 when I visit them, but I don't view it as a game, I view it as light entertainment for 5 minutes, and I wouldn't expect a story from it, In a world, where your avatars have been plucked from their dashboards by an evil omnipotent force, you must guide them back through a series of coloured rings, if you succeed, victory, if you don't... DEATH!

So yeah I can see why that wouldn't really work...

I'll start everything on normal, if its good enough that I want to play again, I'll go up a difficulty.

Regular to hard. Like, I only play most games I play for the story, but then, Mega Man and Mario and Sonic don't have stories and they're some of my favourite games

I like a challenge.

I always go medium and see what they understand with that difficulty. I expect to go game over once or twice. but finishing the game will become all the more satisfying. Also, PS3 games usually give you the easy trophy as well as the normal one if you beat it that way. Saves me the trouble of replaying in an easier, more boring mode.

i usually go for regular to start off with. i don't bother with expert til i properly know what i'm doing. it seems pointless to struggle playing through a game that i haven't played before.

EXTREME MEGA HARD (Insane/Nightmare/"Cool" name given by developers) second time about, for the pressure

Depends on my mood. But usualy I prefer games with character that you actually care about.

Depends on the game realy.....

I usually go for the hardest setting available and scale it down (when possible) until it reaches the point where it's "do-able" but still plenty challenging.
I hate finishing a game in one or two sittings or without failing a single mission or without dying even once.

This has nothing to do with story though.
You can play on "expert" and still take time to enjoy the story.

i have to say i dont really agree with the categories, maybe this isnt how u meant it but to me its like ur saying everyone who likes a good storyline isnt a serious gamer, and everyone who skips cutscenes and just wants to shoot people is a pro

i consider myself a serious gamer, but i very much enjoy the story-mode in games and i like to feel like im a part the game-world while im playing, and on the other hand i enjoy a good multiplayer bloodbath as much as the next guy

so where does that put me? i voted regular to hard, but i dont really think that describes my style

First ya do it with normal difficulty and then, if it was any worth of replay, added difficulty makes it more interesting.

there are some games which story really shine and others... well i'll go for the challenge card there.

It kind of depends on the game and what the incentive might be to play on a tough difficulty, if it is just for achievements then I will play normal as achievements don't motivate me and I will ramp up the difficulty if it is too easy or drop it if it is too hard to start with (then build up the difficulty when I am used to the style)

I did stereotype a bit, sorry. A few people have made similar points. If it makes it easier, consider the hard option to include the hardest difficulty setting but with plot still as a main focus, whereas choosing expert means the plot and pacing for you take a backseat to the challenge presented.

I try to appreciate the story to the best of my ability. God knows how many times I played Halo 1 on like normal or easy.

Well, your system doesn't really apply for me. I'm a story-driven gamer, but I like playing through games on the hardest difficulty, which is annoying because those modes are usually locked in story-driven games until you've completed previous modes.

I never play on easy mode, though. I usually play 'Regular to Hard' first (depending on whether or not there's a fourth difficulty level), but even then I'll only go through the first mission on regular difficulty just to get used to the controls, then bump it up to hard/expert.

I actually like a game that tells me a story and give me a hard time in playing the campaign but it still has to have some multiplayer.
