I like the possibilities that a futuristic sandbox game would have. Keep the gritty atmosphere though.

Rockstar should try for a Vehicle-based gameplay style mixed with their signature sandbox artwork of game design. I'm talking about like what Banjo and kazooie did, but with less scale. Not content with their great platforming, they dumped it all except the story in favor of a Vehicle game. Rockstar should do that, but without completely dumping the formula that made their games great.
Awesome sandbox gameplay + Customizable Vehicular twist = rockstar gem? You never know, it's just a speculation. Imagine you're (Now classic) Nico Bellic-esque character, having to live out of a car in some forgotten corner of the earth, where the vehicles are fashioned a la' Deathrace. I think theres something in the works of that motif called Borderlands, but with rockstar at the wheels anything can happen.
The thing they would also want to do would be heavy customization options to spice up the gameplay. Found a rocket launcher? Add duct tape and a few wires and you have a seriously packing car. Add RC hookup control and have your car autopilot itself to wherever you are. You could add everything thats good about GTA, mix it with Battle racing, and get one of two things. A peice of crap (I don't think rockstar would let that be published, given their high reputation). ORRRRR a very nifty piece of awesome that would refresh Rockstar's gameplay without leaving behind what made it awesome in the first place.

i'd like to see a futuristic sandbox game. Maybe not 'GTA in the year 4000' but something interesting.
Also if they could remove the grit from whatever they use to churn out games, that'd be much appreciated.

Well, A light hearted GTA V would be good, but, for me, the OP's idea about Bully/Canis Canem Edit 2 sounds pretty damn good. I really enjoyed Bully, so more of that, still with the light-heartedness would rock.
However, another Red Dead Revolver should bloody well be released, that game was fantastic!
