i just read what i like which mostly involves fighting ie bernard cornwalls arthur trilogy(warlord chronicals or somethinglike that)
By film based fiction i assume you mean books written based on films, not books that have been made into films, otherwise I read whatever interests me whether it's a movie or not. Generally books that have been made into films don't interest me (except for Fight Club, but I haven't been able to find a copy, not that I'm trying really hard)
I have no interest what so ever in game fiction
Currently reading The Gunslinger by Stephan king (excellent book, there's the next two at the 2nd hand bookstore, hopefully they're still there when I get paid) and I've been meaning to read Filth by Irvine Welsh (which I admit, I picked up because of Trainspotting), but I'm not very good at managing my time for reading
I also bought Welcome to the NHK after seeing the series (the novel that is, not the manga (tho I do have the first manga volume too(I haven't bought manga in years))), so I guess there are exceptions sometimes

I've read a few good game-based books and some Star Wars novels.
However, they are an extremely tiny percentage of what I do read. What do I read? Fiction-wise mostly a lot of science fiction, David Weber always being a favorite of mine along with the classics of Heinlein, Clarke, Asimov and the like. Having said that even then fiction is still a small percentage of my reading, I actually mostly read technical books and the like.
On the off chance any of you are curious, I recently re-read Ceramic Houses and Earth Architecture [http://www.amazon.com/Ceramic-Houses-Earth-Architecture-Build/dp/1889625019/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268145383&sr=8-1] which is all about fairly low-tech adobe/mud-brick building techniques with a particular focus on domes and firing the entire building much as you would a brick or pot so as to fuse it into a monolithic unit. Pretty interesting and full of useful tidbits of information, the biggest problem I have with it is that like nearly all 'alternative' lifestyle/construction/whatever books the author has a tendency to go off the deep-end into 'western industrial society bad' go-self-flagellate-yourself ramblings-n-rants.

Nearly entirely fantasy sword and sorcery type books. Dragonlance, Raymond E Feist, David Eddings they are all good. Though the first 2 are technically based on a tabletop game back in their misty beginnings.
That being said I can not resist a Warhammer 40k book. Dan Abnett is a champion. FOR TANITH!

The only game based fiction I've read are the Halo books First Strike and Fall of Reach, which were pretty good in a teen fiction sort of way. I certainly wouldn't begrudge them their success.
I've also read Xenology, which was a 40k illustrated story, which I think was great, really interesting if only because of the extra illumination it provides on the 40K universe.
