Meles tend to be connection based but I see no other way to do them. But this lends an undeserved advantage to some players, especially in games like CoD and Gears where there isn't a dedicated server. Also with weapons like shotguns and SMGs being soley for CQB there doesn't seem to be a real purpose for meles, so why include them?

Also I searched this but I couldn't find it.

Firstly, its "Melee". Second the unfair advantage you talk about(lag) would be on every weapon (except maybe Explosives) Saying its melee only is silly. Finally, punching people, Pistol whipping and Knifing have always been about two things: Last line of defenses, Such as running out of ammo or badly timed reloads, and Humiliation kills, Ah the fun of knifing Mr. "1337H4x0r" in the face. Think it through a Lil man.

Meles?

Ahh, you mean melee weapons?

Melee weapons/attacks are there for a couple of reasons.

1. When people wish to throw last vestiges of realism out the window and pretend that a slash from a knife against an opponent wearing bodyarmor/heavy clothing is as effective as a bullet.

2. Optional Hardcore. After all, a dude rushing you with a knife is beggin a burst to the head and if he actually manages to kill you, it is a sign that either he is über elite, or you suck.

3. When ammo runs out and the enemy is within striking range.

Take your pick for reasons. Mostly it's just #1, or a combination of #2 and #3.

I see no reason to remove them from any even remotely balanced game, and those where they are not are often fun knifing-competitions.

And just out of curiosity, when you talk of CoD, do you mean the latest (Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2), or perhaps Call Of Duty 2 (one of the best the series has to offer even today)

Or perhaps you meant Call of Duty: Finest Hour?

But I still think the knives in Action Quake were the best melee weapon ever.

Both are good. A lot of times, there is a guy running around with a knife in MW2 getting the most kills. Other times its a guy just sitting in the back sniping. Each choice is good, it just depends how the person uses them.

But my meles are so fun to be using against the hordes of raging infected humans.
Without thems, if I get surrounded by zombehs, I are screwed.
I prefer them over dual pistols, in most cases.

AND THEIR COMPL33T 0WNAGE ON DA TANK NUBS LOOOL!!!!

EDIT: If you're in the middle of a war, and you sneak up on the enemy, it makes sense to have a knife or other melee weapon to use against your opponent, both to conserve ammunition and to refrain from drawing unnecessary attention.
Plus, it adds another layer of variety and strategy to the game, so what's not to like?
If you have a laggy connection, chances are you'll fare worse with bullets, as well.

Oh, "melee". I kept reading it as "What to do about males" and then I was horrifying myself with what "Redo them so they aren't connection based" could possibly mean.

Unfair advantage? No. You learn how to play with your connection. If there's always a 1/5 second delay, you pop 1/5 seconds before you think you should.

In Saint's Row 2, when I'm riding around on a motorbike with a Katana equipped, am I meles on wheels?

That's not quite true. Sometimes I drop all my weapons in CS:S and just knife people... it's great fun :D

(my KDR hardly drops, meelee isn't that hard)

Personally?

Because if you are a fan of giving cover fire for your mates, you need something for when you are flat out of bullets.

Sorry for spelling it wrong I thought that "melee" referred strictly to a brawl or large fight as that was the only place I had seen it used. I saw it spelled "mele" (which I now know is incorrect) when referring to physical attacks.

As to compinsating for it I find that compensating for bullet lag is relativly easy but if I'm trying to melee the host I find this much more difficult, especially since it might be a different delay from game to game.

If you want a last line of defense Shadowrun made it so that you meleed only when you were out of ammo in a gun.

Oh you meant people who use Melee attacks.. Christ I had no idea what this forum was about.
I thought Meles was a boss or something til I read the actual thread.
The reason people melee in games is because it's actually somewhat effective, especially in Modern Warfare 2, when people crouch and exploit that glitch that lets them move uber fast.
It's bullshit really...

I laughed. Out loud.

OT: Yeah, melee should stay. Even if it seems a little overpowered/unrealistic/broken, I find it makes close encounters more frantic and thrilling.

I love melee weapons, especially in red faction geurilla when you drop drown using your jetpack and smash your oponents head 6ft across the wall with your hammer, there is no better feeling than that :p

Plus normally in games melee weapons are instant kills where as your smg or shotgun may take a few shots depending on which game you play.

Like others have said, Melee combat is necessary when out of bullets.

And I must say, I like the way they do it in Gears. Yes, I know don't whine about people who chainsaw rush. But the blunt weapons do good damage and are completely necessary with weapons like the sniper, torque bow, and boomshot. All are one shot weapons, if you miss, you need to defend yourself! Also, it's a fucking chainsaw, you get hit with it your dead! I like how that works.

It's definitely not in MW2, since there are people running around doing nothing but knifing. In most other games, I'd agree with you however.

You do realize MW2 melee is probably the most overpowered, overused thing in the game, right? You can lunge 5 feet at people, teleporting through their shots, killing them instantly.

I dont have a problem with it except the MW2 throwing knife(its a melee wepon) it can hit yu in the sole of your foot and you will dieit just makes me angrey and as people have sid before MW2 has a lot of knife spammer but I think we should just leave it and people will stop after being insulted 10,000 times by people who dont melee spam.

Because clearly, there's nothing just as overpowert as being able to melee at a fife foot distance, when virtually any non-shotgun weapon in the game can easily kill you from a hundred foot distance.
