If it was with no one else around, I'd definitely go and ask what's wrong.

If it was in a crowded room, then truth be told, I'd wait for someone else to go first. If not, then I'd go and talk to her.

I'd feel horrible for doing nothing, but, truth be told, I've never been in such a situation. Whether for the good, or the bad, I don't know.

I'd ask them what was wrong. If they told me to go fuck myself and, more importantly, mind my own business, they'd be well within their rights, but I'd feel like a dick if I didn't at least try to help.

Also, it's topics like these that remind me just how awkward the Escapist is.

Eh. I can be a rightous dick sometimes. It comes in handy as my counter-manipulation tool. But I wouldn't hurry and leave quickly until after I talked to them to figure out why they're crying.

If its a friend, or I know them remotely then I'll go up too them and put my arm around them and ask "what's wrong?"

but i'd probly at least see if she's ok.
unless i'm in a bad mood ( work related 95% of the time) then i'll ignor her completly

Walk away, panicked. Girls scare me and I can barely talk to them when they're acting normally. In fact, this exact situation has happened to me before, once with an incredibly beautiful blonde I had classes with at community college and in high school. I knew her and had spoken to her in the past. I just sat there like nothing was happening. I figured I would embarrass her if I pried into her personal life. Plus, she was always so hot, I never felt like I was on the same level of social interaction to be able to approach her. But now, we're getting into more of my personal neuroses and that's no excuse. Me = complete f****** coward chicken s***.

This reminds me of last years new year when i was walking towards a bar and i saw this girl crying like hell on a stop sign....i was so shocked by that girl i stopped looked at her for a bit and went to ask her "hey are you ok"
the horrified look she gave me......and her eyes...god im not sure how much drugs were involved in her party but sheesh....

Okay enough memories...
well ive had couple of situations like those...im kinda of a comic relief in those moments...thats how i prefer to help other ppl.....its just very weird girls are so sensitive in moments like these....im always thinking had before i say anything...dont wanna mess things up even more...
But with strangers...after new year...hell no...its not my problem :O

If I knew her I'd ask what was wrong. If I didn't know her I'd ignore it and seethe to myself that some silly cow is trying to get attention.

I was presented with this situation once in my life and my instinct then was to console her.

If it was someone I didn't care about or didn't know though, I would ignore them.

Ok, so as per the thread http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.193598-Poll-If-you-cry-youre-weak we've established that it's ok to cry AS LONG AS there's a good reason. "I broke my nail" or "the batteries ran out" are not "good reasons" according to that thread.

So, let's assume that this mysterious girl (your sister, your cousin, your best friend, your girlfriend, that shy girl at school, whoever) has a good reason, and she's crying in front of YOU.

What do you do? Instinctive response, not PC :)
My instinct would be to ask if they were ok/what was wrong, and give them a cuddle. If there was something I could do to help I would, otherwise reassure them. Not much else you can do.

EDIT: Fixed the quote box

(Though why did you post "see a girl crying"? That's an interesting discussion in and of itself: seeing a boy cry vs a girl.)
Because you give boys booze/boobs when he's crying.

Easy answer. Would make for a short thread.
Lol, but a disparaging answer. (Not trying to derail the thread here, but I just want to say this)

This falls into the current social norms that men shouldn't show emotion, and are incapable of feeling any true emotion and are emotionally shallow.
I assume you are a girl.
Men do feel emotions, IMO more so than women.

However what would you prefer? Someone that crumbles beside you in tears or somebody that offers you his shoulder for you to cry on and a firm arm to lift you back on your feet?

*patriotic song*

For reasons stated earlier, it is a man's duty to ensure the happiness of women around him. Empathy, sadness, joy ... these are feelings that get in the way of this goal, therefore we cast them aside. It saddens me to realize that you can only see the hardened shell we have forged when we only hone our skills in order to impress, protect and please our females. But sadly... underneath it all.... we are weak! and this weakness that can only be diminished by the happiness of a woman (refer to earlier post). To ensure this happiness is the reason that men grow strong, harden themselves and gather enough strength to even kill a bear with our bare hands if he needs to, hands that yet, are delicate enough to gently wipe a tear of sadness from your cheek.

*stares proudly at the sunset*
I know that men can feel emotion, I just think it's too bad you all swallow them down in your need to be the protector. Most women I know would rather have a man that was just a little more open.

I'm not saying that anyone (man or woman) should burst into tears at the drop of a hat. But I think men are taught to over-repress their emotions.

I am a guy and if someone did this to me i would tell them to get lost. Guy cry to you know not as much because we slove problems differently. Girl backstab (If you don't it was just in general) and guy hit each other in the face. Just a fact and thats why i think guy's cry less, but some of us think about thing and then cry. If a girl give to boobs then it will be a bad time for any acount.

Quietly walk up, sit half a human width away from them (my width, for operationalization's sake), and, while looking away (you don't stare at them or anything), quietly ask if they are ok.

I have no idea what you're talking about. No idea what do ever.

You... hate boobs and women's tendency to back stab, so you think about 'the thing' and cry?

...That doesn't sound right.

Um... yeah. I never said i didn't like boobs, i just think it is a bad time to get them out when someone is crying. (time and place for everything) And yeah do you really only have happy thoughts in you head. I cried loads when my grand-pa died but not when i was the the funeral. At school i would start to cry when i though about it. I am a guy but so what it was a very sad thing and sometime i still cry about it.
