I once found a bit of it since I was curious what all the craze is about...

And I just could not take it. From now on I tend to ignore it.

My Little Pony? The Show from the 80's? They made a new one huh? I wasn't aware that it had returned to cult status. All the girlies wanted these when I was a wee lad. Guess things haven't changed that much after all.
My Y chromosome says hi.

If you were trying to be insulting by insinuating that all men who like MLP are girly. I can't exactly speak for everypony, but I say machismo is for suckers.
Observe your reaction to my post, then inspect your feelings of inadequacy and figure them out buddy. I wasn't trying to be insulting. Wasn't making a general statement about anyone either. To each their own. All the girlies DID want these when I was a wee lad. I guess my attempt at gentle humor was a failure as well. But hey, at least you got to puff your chest out and defend your cause that wasn't being attacked, huh? Good for you, Mr. Machismo is for Suckers.
It's late. I'm in a defensive mind set. And, yeah, I guess I am still a little insecure about liking MLP. Sorry about reacting like that.

Man, this thread got pretty serious... all I really have to add is a little lightening of the mood. The new MLP is a cute, lighthearted show, easily ingested in small, 22-minute doses... but its real potential is in stuff like this:

It's just good. That's all there is to it.

The show's bloody fantastic. The only reason people say "wait, why do people like this?" is because it happens to appeal to a demographic other than its perceived target better, i.e. males of about 16-30.

The same thing would happen if suddenly a whole load of seven year old girls took up Gears of War. It's because it's unusual, and that receives a lot of attention.

I was curious about it a few days ago, and on a webcomic I read (Fanboys [http://fanboys-online.com/index.php], to be specific) the writer was raving about how good it was, with a link to the first episode on Youtube. A couple of days later and I'm up to date with the show, absolutely loving it, and eagerly awaiting the next episode.

I assure you they hate it there. Basically, the pony fans are all trolls there. They know we hate the show and they stil post a billion fucking threads about it!

I watched the show, it is... kinda cute. But still I don't understand the people who are fucking obsessed over it! Brony? What is wrong with them people? Why is everything that a group of people like spawns a god damn cult?

I just want to point out that I enjoyed the old My Little Pony from my childhood... I haven't actually seen the new show but the ponies are very cute, although I prefer my old school ponies.

No worries. Love what you love openly, I say. You like dems ponies, good for you. I'll let you in a secret: I'm waaaay to old for them, but I still love me some Gundam or Macross. Giant robots are the business, as far as I'm concerned. I wrote a paper in college about how giant robot anime contains fundamental elements of many other mythological tropes. In other words, how giant robots are modern myths.(You can argue anything if you follow APA lol)Point being, I'm kind of ashamed of myself for liking giant robots so much 'cause I feel like I'm too old for 'em, but I can't help it. I genuinely love the giant robot mythology. So don't feel bad for loving what you love, man. At any rate, at least we both have the maturity to conclude our conversation like civilized people, yes? We should pat ourselves on the back for that, m'friend. Go on with your bad self.

In an attempt to gain perspective I watched the first episode and I don't knwo what I find more disturbing, that grown men not only watch the show but obsess over it, or that they feel the need to defend it vehemently. Now I'm not questioning your manhood or as you so eloquently put it, acting on machismo, but that is a show unequivocally aimed at young children. Now taking that into context, I can understand where the online community of my little pony fans seek to belong to a group or have a place to fit in, but why not admit that and move on instead of claiming some higher enlightenment by being someone who watches it?

If you must know,I love that show.I was skeptical at first, telling myself this couldn't possibly appeal to me in any way,but the way it's animated is cute and some of the jokes are pretty funny. Not in a stand up comedian making an hilarious political statement, but a chuckling funny.
It's a guilty pleasure for me.

Because the internet culture was born out of obsessives and was used by mainly obsessives early on. Message boards were popularized by geek culture.

Still, I find these obsessions quite unhealthy. Sometimes I wish people could direct the energy they spend on stupid things towards something useful, but nooooo, let's just be all over some ponies and japanese love pillows! Not to imply there is any connection between those two, of course.

All and all, cute show, but I won't watch further than the first episode because I don't find it interesting (besides, I hate it when people make assumptions about me, such as "if you watch just one episode, you will be hooked"). If I want to see cuteness at a weaponised level I will go play with a kitten or find a wolf in Minecraft :D

No idea.

But it's probably the same mechanisms at play as when guys - a fair few guys apparently - are watching cutesy magical girl anime shows about the power of friendship and other diabetes-inducing stuff (though personally I'll stick to the foil [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.275533-Puella-Magi-Madoka-Magica-Review] to those).

Doesn't bother me in the least that others like fluffy stuff. Different strokes and all.

Have you ever watched Elfen Lied? Violence, violence, gore, sadness, cruelty, nudity and then heart melting cuteness amongst it all. Its cuteness is amplified because of all the violence and sadness you have seen.

I feel that this is a good analogy for describing the situation of ponies on the internet.

I don't care about the shows or the ponies themselves, but I make customs, because it's a base I enjoy working on.

Well, it's better than getting obsessed over your religion or political leader.
Worst that will most likely happen is that you go flame someone on a forum, instead of arranging a witchhunt for people who dislike ponies and flaming them literally.

Well like I said I don't knock anything. The show though was made to target girls and theres tons of dudes evidently "these Bronys" that watch it. I think it's totally off for dudes to watch MLP but I won't say you can't.
Well I'm glad to see that you aren't actively fighting it like so many threads that have gone before you. Still, I think you should give it a go and watch an episode before dismissing it. Who knows, you might just be a Brony yourself.
Well I'll try out the 1st epi. Cause I've never watched it, I don't know. I hope I won't become one of you 'No offence'. I hope that I've leased my soul out so I won't get sucked in.
The two part pilot isn't a good way to gauge the whole show because it follows a different formula than the rest. For an accurate representation watch any other episode.
I'm currently watching part 2 of the pilot....and.....I.....like...it. Will definitely watch more, in between listening to Devildriver.

You can't expect everyone to use their time in a productive manner. Touhou and Homestuck made sure to wipe out any and all thoughts on the contrary.

All and all, cute show, but I won't watch further than the first episode because I don't find it interesting (besides, I hate it when people make assumptions about me, such as "if you watch just one episode, you will be hooked").
I don't understand why so many people start with the first episode for FiM when with every other cartoon out there, they just watch the episode you can find the fastest. The show's background setup and continuity is about as significant as Adventure Time, Phineas and Ferb, or Futurama (by which I mean completely irrelevant more than 90% of the time). After episode 3, the premiere is no longer relevant. Between episode one and Swarm of the Century, they might as well be different series.

I agree. Season 2 was confirmed.
-snipped pic-

[HEADING=2]YAY!!!!![/HEADING]

OT: I like MLP. Deal with it.
Season 2 isn't until December though. And there are only 3 more episodes left for series 1 :(
let's just hope I cam last as long as some other kids shows out there.

I'll watch the show if it was on and I was looking for something to watch, but I'm not about to go out of my way to find it.

It's a focal point for nerds everywhere. A bit like how you might have a favourite artist or game, and you'll find another person with said interests and hit it off with them. By being part of the pony crowd, they can associate with others without the usual barriers nerds face when talking to others, namely awkwardness.
Why do they love it so much? I imagine it's because they're taking the piss, like a forced-version of how a grown man might start knee-knocking at the sight of a childhood icon; these are the same people who use the term "i'm being ironic", and deserve a slap for it.
