It became so horrible when the teachers made you over analyze every word of the book and you couldn't enjoy the plot or characters.

If its something i like to read I'm all over it! I can also remember being back in school and hearing moans and groans while a reading assignment was being handed out. I think every generation goes through this.

I love reading but some how all of my danish teachers have had the ability to pick up a book that would ruin the experience. They were either about psychos, sex or both... unless it was about teen love.. hence most of my friends never discovered the joy of reading a great book when all they ever got was the crappy ones

Are you kidding me? 66% "I love to read" my ass. I bet most the people who said that are a bunch of phonies who read a page every blue moon.

I think it's because all school books are crap. Plain and simple, if my teach assigned me to read Terry Pratchet, Harry Harrison, James Blish or some other author I liked, I wouldn't complain, but they don't, and I do.

Reading is great. But schools ruin it by forcing you to read. They remove the concept of reading for enjoyment and turn it into a chore. I myself hated reading in school because the books where do damn boring. I don't care if you think they are intellectually stimulating, i'm 15 and male, i don't give a shit.

But that was when i was in school. Now i barely read because i have other things that i prefer to do, like go outside or play games.

Reading has always been awesome, as long as you have the imagination for it.

If someone has only ever watched TV then I can't imagine they would be able to enjoy a book too much as they'd be used to being shown what everything looks like as opposed to creating their own version.

For example, I'm willing to bet that the image I have of....I don't know....Perrin in the Wheel of Time series is different to everyone elses. That's th joy of it!

That said, every copy of 'The Handmaids Tale' by Margaret Atwood should be pulped, burnt or recycled into toilet paper. Bloody horrific.

The reason is not because people are being told to read, the reason is because English assigned reading usually sucks, almost every book I read attached to an assignment has been so awful I felt like I WAS being tortured, I love reading though.

Out of every assigned reading I've ever had only "Ender's Game" was good, and I had already read that before it was assigned because it's a great book

Someone else may have mentioned this, but it also depends on the assignment.

I love reading, but I whined and groaned over several reading assignments in school. I hated Grapes of Wrath. The Great Gatsby was... tolerable. But most of the classic American lit I had to read was just not my style.

Also, how much of that whining and groaning is also simply because it's more homework?

It's because reading is slow an linear, and people now-a-days think fast and nebulously. Forcing them to think slow enough to properly absorb information through such a medium as the written word requires a fair bit of work on their part. Some would say a whole different mindset.

Of course, if you're of the mindset to think slowly (I prefer the word thoroughly) or calmly, then reading is good.

Most people associate reading books with being boring for this same reason.

Slow things are boring.
Reading is slow.
Therefore, reading is boring.

When it come to schoolwork, though, even the most devout reader probably won't want to be forced to read something.

Actually, I've read four books in the last 6-or-so weeks. So neuh! =P

The moment you make anything 'required' it saps the enjoyment out of it. This isn't just for reading, but any activity.

As for suggestions to soften the blow I would recommend either audio books or learning how to speed read.

I groan because 99% of the time it's a sucky book. A lot of people do seem to repulse at the thought of reading any book though. Laziness i say!
If they gave it a try they'd probably prefer it to most films, though not much of a challenge considering the films these days.

I wish i read more really. I enjoy it when i do but i never commit to a book (just like i never commit to games), i must have like 6 half read books lying around somewhere.

I like reading a lot, however the books I had to read for school were generally not interesting. I love fantasy and detective books, but we always had to read boring (dutch atleast, english atleast had a few interesting ones) literature.
U ever read Skullduggery Pleasant?

Reading's fuckin awesome. Where movies and videogames continuously fail. Books will always have insane plots, dialogue and action.
Exactly, books almost always deliver with perfect writing when compared to some movies and games, mainly because that books don't need an animation budget, voice acting budget, and the lot.

Reading became horrible when Virgina Woolf, Jane Austin, and John Steinbeck decided to start writing.

For something good, read Kurt Vonnegut, Mark Twain, H.P. Lovecraft, Douglas Adams, Geoffry Chaucer (although the language is something to get used to), or Jonathan Glasman.

They would be my favorite authors.

My favorite video games, incidentally are the ones which have stories of novel quality.

It may sound weird, but I always thought Condemned: Criminal Origins had one of the best and most novel story lines.

Can't say I have, haven't read many english books because my family has mostly dutch ones and my city's library also only has a small section of english books.

Just looked it up and it looks interesting, need to keep it in mind next time I plan on ordering some books from amazon.
