They'll stop when the franchise stops being profitable. It's as simple as that. Hell if I know when that will happen though.

Christ, I was dumb enough to buy 12. That one killed the franchise for me though.

I think they'll end it when the name stops being such a cash cow.

Alternately, why don't they just switch to model years? Final Fantasy 2009, Final Fantasy 2010 Luxury Edition, and so forth.
They may as well, except JRPGs take a longer time to make than, say, new King of Fighters games (until SNK finally stopped the by year release with 2003).

Until you, yes, YOU stop buying them.
I expect that will be sometime after 2060, if a car doesn't hit me first.

I'd go with never, and why should they. They create entirely new universes each time, yeah, they tend to be related, but in my experience the stories are almost always superbly well written. I loved 7-10. I haven't tried 12 or 13 yet though...

Lost Odyssey has felt like a bit of a disappointment so far though... don't know why. I guess this particular storyline just isn't sucking me in like the others.

You mean when they will keep their promise about it being "final"? Who knows hopefully soon or im going to sue them for flagrant false marketing.
In all fairness they only planned to make one. It was supposed to be Square's(I think it was Square, could have just as easily been Enix or Square Enix) last game, thus final fantasy, however it sold a lot better than they expected and they kept the series alive and kept the name.

I'm going to ask you to explain this and depending on your response I'm going to ask for your forgivness in advance for maybe throttaling you to death.
I feel dumb for having bought it because I didn't like X-2, as it was fairly boring and felt like a pathetic cash-in on X's success. On reflection, none of the Final Fantasy series has been that well written with plot holes everywhere if one looks for them (maybe not the early ones... 6 seemed fine, but my memory about it is more than a little hazy, and I didn't play the ones before then). 7 was fun at the time, and 10 seemed like an improvement in every way; characters more likable, story flowed better, much more clever puzzle sequences.

In 12, I didn't find myself relating to any of the characters except possibly Ashe, and couldn't find any reason she kept the others around except as meat shields (and the one guy who was a loyal follower, I forget his name). The story was poorly told and it bored me, the characters were uninteresting and I saw no reason they should be a group (they worked in pairs; there were 3 pairs that all go together, but none of the pairs had any meaningful connection). As the killing blow, the combat was mind-numbing. I thought the addition of Gambits and the like would make it flow faster, but what it did was completely remove any need for me to pay attention to combat, which meant it was unnecessary; combat became just a delay where I waited for the characters to finish and then moved the analog stick around some more to the next one. I actually leveled up a lot in the game because I often worked late and sometimes had to get up early; so I'd come home at 2:00 AM and play FF12 to put me to sleep on my couch and wake up at 6.

The combat was just a horrible idea; it seemed like a good concept and I anticipated it early on, but in practice it was pathetically boring. My only contribution was to wheel the characters from one fight to the next and occasionally pop items during boss fights. At least in 7 and 10 you had to click a button to kill things, even if that usually just meant holding down "x."

I never played 8 or 9. I've heard mostly positive things about 8, but never bothered to buy it. 9 I've seen played, and the art direction alone grated on my skin, and so did the lines of every single character.

At any rate, the trend in modern gaming is to make the story more generic so more people can understand it. For me, this makes the story massively more boring, so I don't understand it because I can't pay attention. A story that doesn't make me think isn't worth reading (watching, whatever). I can forgive games that rely on coolness, provided it meets MY definitions of coolness, and stories that focus primarily on character development can work as well (God of War style). Regardless, the gameplay still has to be fun, and I don't feel the Final Fantasy franchise is going to innovate in a way I find fun.

As long as it makes money it won't stop. So around XXX.
I would be more than a little amused if it did make it to XXX. It very well might, a lot of people swear by the Final Fantasy franchise.

When and if Square Enix dies.

Seriously, [b/]Final[/b] Fantasy must be the most ironic series in gaming ever.

Had you not beat me to the punch, I was to post: When the Japanese learn the meaning of irony.
