They'll stop when the franchise stops being profitable. It's as simple as that. Hell if I know when that will happen though.
Christ, I was dumb enough to buy 12. That one killed the franchise for me though.
I'm going to ask you to explain this and depending on your response I'm going to ask for your forgivness in advance for maybe throttaling you to death.
I feel dumb for having bought it because I didn't like X-2, as it was fairly boring and felt like a pathetic cash-in on X's success. On reflection, none of the Final Fantasy series has been that well written with plot holes everywhere if one looks for them (maybe not the early ones... 6 seemed fine, but my memory about it is more than a little hazy, and I didn't play the ones before then). 7 was fun at the time, and 10 seemed like an improvement in every way; characters more likable, story flowed better, much more clever puzzle sequences.
In 12, I didn't find myself relating to any of the characters except possibly Ashe, and couldn't find any reason she kept the others around except as meat shields (and the one guy who was a loyal follower, I forget his name). The story was poorly told and it bored me, the characters were uninteresting and I saw no reason they should be a group (they worked in pairs; there were 3 pairs that all go together, but none of the pairs had any meaningful connection). As the killing blow, the combat was mind-numbing. I thought the addition of Gambits and the like would make it flow faster, but what it did was completely remove any need for me to pay attention to combat, which meant it was unnecessary; combat became just a delay where I waited for the characters to finish and then moved the analog stick around some more to the next one. I actually leveled up a lot in the game because I often worked late and sometimes had to get up early; so I'd come home at 2:00 AM and play FF12 to put me to sleep on my couch and wake up at 6.
The combat was just a horrible idea; it seemed like a good concept and I anticipated it early on, but in practice it was pathetically boring. My only contribution was to wheel the characters from one fight to the next and occasionally pop items during boss fights. At least in 7 and 10 you had to click a button to kill things, even if that usually just meant holding down "x."
I never played 8 or 9. I've heard mostly positive things about 8, but never bothered to buy it. 9 I've seen played, and the art direction alone grated on my skin, and so did the lines of every single character.
At any rate, the trend in modern gaming is to make the story more generic so more people can understand it. For me, this makes the story massively more boring, so I don't understand it because I can't pay attention. A story that doesn't make me think isn't worth reading (watching, whatever). I can forgive games that rely on coolness, provided it meets MY definitions of coolness, and stories that focus primarily on character development can work as well (God of War style). Regardless, the gameplay still has to be fun, and I don't feel the Final Fantasy franchise is going to innovate in a way I find fun.
