...do you prefer the spacecraft to control like jet planes or battleships (or Star Wars fighter spacecraft vs. Star Trek star ship spacecraft)?

Backstory for the thread: I recently played the demo to Star Trek: Starfleet Command 2: Empires at War. I love the way you have to control the ships in the game. Although technically all things are managed by a crew in the game, the interface makes it seem like one person could control the ship.

The way combat plays out in Starfleet Command is very different from the faster paced Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.

So, I thought I'd ask: do you prefer to control spacecraft at a fast pace like the space fighters found in Star Wars, or the very tactical spacecraft found in Star Trek?

NOTE: This is NOT a direct comparison between the two settings, but rather the control of the craft.

EDIT 1: Should I change this to which type of spacecraft control you yourself would like?

EDIT 2: Okay, this poll is about how you would prefer your spacecraft to patrol.

EDIT 3: I focus only on the dogfighting craft of Star Wars since they are the most prominent and memorable in the movies. Same with the star ships of Star Trek (which has very few, if any, actual fighters).

Personally, I prefer the ships to control more like jets. It seems to lend a more visceral experience to the battles. It shows the true ability of the pilots. Instead of just pushing buttons here and there, your wits have to be more in tune with what's going on around you to be able to pilot your ship and keep an eye on the battle.

I like both. Mix them up. In Starwars they always had big capitol ships that work like battleships, while at the same time they had little fighters scrambling.

Yeah a combo is best. You have the larger ships fighting each other as well as smaller dog fights going on.

You need an "other" option.

I prefer my space battles like Gurren Lagann, where they are throwing entire galaxies at each other because the giant robots are just so damn huge.

That final space battle was truly epic!

I hate driving vehicles in games, so I prefer the battleship approach, where I can board the enemy vessel and destroy it from within.

Thanks for the suggestion about "other". I've added the option in.

As for space battles, I was mainly talking about what kind of control you would prefer.

Um...

Wing Commander which is more starwars esque than anything else I can compare it to...

Descent, or Freespacey, as in, dogfights, fast-paced personal combat. I like that.

Yet I also like doing the RTS-like commanding role.

But which ship would I rather pilot? One that actually requires piloting rather than chain-of-commanding.

I think for the next battlefront game they should include the option of control the capitol ships. Judging by the way the ships are made (i.e very similar to galleons of old) broadsiding enemy ships whould reak of awesome.

But yeah, Smaller craft handling like jets, Larger cruisers not. Just avoid the controls used in star trek legacy, They suck.

What do you think of the controls in Star Trek: Starfleet Command 1 & 2? I heard 3's was different, so I'm asking only about the first two.

Just out of curiosity, what about chain of commanding bothers you?

Despite my love of the gameplay in Starfleet command, I don't like the idea of having to rely on other people like that. If it was just the controls like in the game, that'd be fine by me.

Now it's about time I vote on my own poll.

The bolded part.

Also there's a part of me that's never quite satisfied with a kill involving me pressing a button that launches a missile that traveled 300 km to blow them up, and instead prefers to, you know, be chasing them down, dodging their rockets with my chaff release, diverting power to afterburns to do a loop and then popping energy full to guns for an alpha strike...

You really need both. Capital ships are awesome, but the idea of a fleet that lacks smaller ships like fighters, bombers, and troop transports seems a bit silly.

I would prefer them to be like ships on EVE Online. Varying in speed and maneuverability depending on the thrust they exert.

I do believe that once the treaty of "no weapons in space" has been ripped to shreds and used as toilet paper, that stellar naval battles will be like those fought on earth.

You know what I like?

When the space ships don't fight each other directly because of technology limitations but instead fight on the planet or moon by dropping troops, equipment etc. The space ships (or possibly space stations) float by next to each other, peacefully, while down below the war they supply wages on with hundreds of thousand dying. It's kind of like a game of chess, in a very strange and sick way.

Other:

Some form of sleek armour with rockets and missiles. Possibly iron-man-ish, but faster, much faster.

I like both, jet-like for fighters, battleship-like for... well, battleships in space.
I doubt the Star Destroyers in Star Wars are steered the way the X-Wings are, by the way.
