I think for the next battlefront game they should include the option of control the capitol ships. Judging by the way the ships are made (i.e very similar to galleons of old) broadsiding enemy ships whould reak of awesome.

But yeah, Smaller craft handling like jets, Larger cruisers not. Just avoid the controls used in star trek legacy, They suck.
Imagine having a whole crew of players, organizing each other, coordinating strikes whilst boarding and staying away from the other ships!

Um...

Wing Commander which is more starwars esque than anything else I can compare it to...

Descent, or Freespacey, as in, dogfights, fast-paced personal combat. I like that.

Yet I also like doing the RTS-like commanding role.

But which ship would I rather pilot? One that actually requires piloting rather than chain-of-commanding.
Just out of curiosity, what about chain of commanding bothers you?

Despite my love of the gameplay in Starfleet command, I don't like the idea of having to rely on other people like that. If it was just the controls like in the game, that'd be fine by me.

Now it's about time I vote on my own poll.
The bolded part.

Also there's a part of me that's never quite satisfied with a kill involving me pressing a button that launches a missile that traveled 300 km to blow them up, and instead prefers to, you know, be chasing them down, dodging their rockets with my chaff release, diverting power to afterburns to do a loop and then popping energy full to guns for an alpha strike...

:x
Actually, both things sound quite similar to the gameplay in the Starfleet Command series, especially the last bit.

You really need both. Capital ships are awesome, but the idea of a fleet that lacks smaller ships like fighters, bombers, and troop transports seems a bit silly.
Actually, what I meant what kind of control do you prefer. I'll try to edit the topic to reflect this.

I like the idea of controlling a bigger ship. Huge amounts of fire power in a complicated ship that requires multiple people to control... Awesome. Ofcource, fighters are needed too, but it's not as cool.

Something completely different from any of the choices already portrayed. Neither of your choices accurately depict what space warfare may be like, and I only hypothesise when I say that it will be extremely slow, based around moderately-sized spacecraft with tiny crews, firing missiles and mass driver projectiles with a twenty-minute-plus flight time, fought for the control of orbits.

I believe that thinking of space warfare as an analogue to battleship combat is extremely lazy and completely ignores the third dimension, and there are very good reasons why it won't be anything like jet combat - which you would know if you had even a rudimentary knowledge of secondary-school physics. It's going to be very slow, requiring massive mathematical prowess from the crew, with the chances of catastrophic failure from even a single hit.
Its a good read and I reckon most people realise that hollywood space physics in no way represent reality.

But ultra realistic space combat just comes across as massively boring, like really really boring.

Its like comparing sea battles from the tallship period, exchanging broadsides within metres of each other to the modern naval warfare of launch a missle and kill a ship you can't even see a 100 miles away.

Still its a good write up.

100 players per match, 50 per team, Starting in capitol ships - 30 or so go out in crafts, The other 20 control the ship.

But think of the n00bs...

Still - if a game like this comes out, and is good[/I], My social life as we know it would end!
