Like Extra Credit says, games can't hide behind that anymore.

Onyx Oblivion already said what I really meant by that:PatSilverFox said:NoArt Axiv said:Can it be "just a game"?

Do we really have to over-analyze everything?Onyx Oblivion said:This is the Escapist, silly.Art Axiv said:Can it be "just a game"?
We over-analyze EVERYTHING.
This is why I hate Extra Credits. Turned this site into a bunch of over-analytic EC-quoting zombies.Art Axiv said:Onyx Oblivion already said what I really meant by that:PatSilverFox said:NoArt Axiv said:Can it be "just a game"?

Of course we have to.
They're aren't the rule-makers on games. What they say isn't fact.PatSilverFox said:NoArt Axiv said:Can it be "just a game"?

Actually, yes.stoprequesting said:Oh no! I hate intelligent discourse! We should only see video games as consumer products, not as a legitimate medium!Onyx Oblivion said:Turned this site into a bunch of over-analytic EC-quoting zombies.
The only difference is Duke Nukem is meant to be a parody. It is only as sexist as the rest of the industry.Valagetti said:But they are portraying them as objects... like the majority of games.
While I generally agree with what Extra Credits say in their presentations/podcasts, in this topic I think that analyzing why or if Duke is sexist or not is just stupid. If he is, does it change something in our daily lives? If he isn't, should we care? I care for neither. I fail to see how Duke being sexist or not influences anyones life. All studies done on behavior being influenced by games is inconclusive, so by far we can't say if anyone will follow Duke as some sort of idol - unless kids will play this game, and the game is rated 18 or 16 so unless I'm mistaken so it shouldn't happen.Onyx Oblivion said:*snip*
Sigh. It doesn't really matter if even every single woman in the game is depicted as a stripper or porn star. The "shake it baby" example, even a singular instance of it, is sexist. Frequency does not define the nature of a product. I didn't say that sexism is something that inherently oppresses anyone. It does portray them in a servile, slutty light, which is by definition sexist (see dictionary definition, above).Zaik said:Well, it's not sexist because it doesn't portray every woman in the whole world as a stripper or porn star. The idea that strippers and porn movies exist doesn't oppress women in real life, why does it in a video game?
More or less, everything you are saying is reading into something with nothing to read into. Just like you can turn anything into a conspiracy theory if you scrutinize hard enough, you can make anything sexist if you're coming to it just trying to make it sexist.
Also that's likely Duke Nukem 3D.
Chell, Lilith from Borderlands, Zoe, Rochell, Faith, Half the cast of Street Fighter, Samus, Chloe Frazer, Commander Shepard, Trip, should I go on?Valagetti said:Because men in games are presented as gods, like becoming immune to bullets by hiding behind a wall. Tell me how many competent female characters are there in games? The Boss n' Alyx Vance only spring to mind.
