Depends on what's better.
Halo 3's competitive blows it's coop out of the water.
RE5's competitive can go die in a hole.

Bit of both, CoD 5 for example, I like the co-op then when we go online I like competitive.

Co-op, the awesome feelings of kicking ass with your friends can't be compared to anything. Especially when you're in a sticky situation. Hysterical screaming through mics = awesome.

"Flanking right!"

"Out of ammo, need cover!"

"Sniper on the roof!"

"WHERE THE HELL IS THE COVERING FIRE!"

both are cool, but in some games it's nice if there is some kind of system to keep track of who is pwning the most.

Why not both? TF2 does this charmingly well.
So does Guild Wars.

Competitive + cooperative. You cooperate with your team to defeat another team.

Or Aion, where both player races can in theory cooperate in taking down the Fortress General. Still, since the most effective's group's Legion will get the Fortress, usually betrayal will occur as soon as the NPCs are killed and all that is left to do is killing the General himself.

Co-operative. End of story...
... Ok, ok. I'll elaborate.

"ahem" Each of my friends has an, let's say, expertise in different game genres. Playing a competitive game means that we would have some horribly one-sided results in some games and nobody would really have a great time when he is reminded constantly that he sucks or something similar. And besides, in my opinion at least, competitive gaming could potentially bring forth the worst traits of somebody, i.e. do everything to win rather than just mess around to have fun.

Coop. I am without the necessary time to perfect the skills that dominating competitive play would require.

Co-op

But idiots could just fuck it up so easily, ruin all the fun and make it all very frustrating.

Example:
L4D Expert Campaigns
3 Pro's
1 idiot
= All Fail.

and from my experience that Idiot is usually playing as Francis :O
I used to play with a some one(playing Francis) who always thought it was a good idea to run away at the sight of zombies. He would leave the rest of the team to fight tanks, hordes of zombies, you name it. Then he would find it hilarious to jump off the nearest ledge, because randomly suiciding never, ever gets old. After that, he would complain about how we wouldn't let him respawn. If we ever did let him respawn, he immediately wanted everyone's medkit and pills.

I'm not much for competitive multiplayer. Such a situation is just asking for douchebaggery to abound. I vastly prefer to work with others to destroy in-game and programmed enemies; they don't just grab the battle rifle for ez mode or teabag you after they defeat you. I for one look forward to being enslaved by computer overlords.

I like Competitive play because i enjoy going in leagues and other things with games i find it adds a new seriousness to the game. Also i'm just a competitive person.

That's a good question. I adore Left 4 Dead, but at the same time I play Halo 3 much more than I do any other game.
If Borderlands turns out to be the almost infinitely replayable co-op MMORPG-esque game that I hope it will be, and nothing in the game has done anything to convince me otherwise up until this point, then co-op will forevermore be my answer.

Cooperative.
It's more fun, especially during LANs (which is pretty much the only multiplayer I play).

Competitive (more specifically competitive deathmatches without teams). Because in cooperative, people tend to get annoyed by my habit of shooting anything that comes into my sights, regardless of allegiance.
