Where is the IV? WHERE IS THE VI?! GAAAAAAAAAAAAH

IV is my favorite. Emulate it for SNES. VI is a fan favorite and one of my favorites. It's also on the SNES. of the ones you listed, IX is my favorite purely for the characters. Every other final fantasy game has at least one (usually more) characters that are just fucking terrible. I thought VIII was fun as well, if a little (a lot) unbalanced.

EDIT:

Protip; the earlier ones are better then the new ones. Well everything is better then 14. Seriously, you should not play 14, i mean from everything everyones said that should be a given :p

It is the unfortunate truth about the series. And has left many fans in despair.

My first was VII, and I loved that, so I suggest that. IX, however, is a better game overall, so mabye that. One of those two.

Disclaimer: Emulating games is only legal if you own a genuine copy of said games.
Might also want to clarify that it is dependent on where one lives and if one is actually playing via the disc. In the US by way of example there is no legal way to justify using an ISO image or ROM file as they are are copies of the software and as such copies are not protected.(Edit: Even if you copied the files from the discs) If you own the discs ... thats a more of a gray area.
I really only put it there to avoid suspension, but yeah, emulation is a grey area by default because of the emulators' very nature.
Even if reverse-engineering the system itself is okay, there's always the BIOS to worry about.
I don't know of any cases against emulators / emulation in general but this is mostly due to them emulating past systems, so noone cares apparently.
On the other hand there's the DS and Wii emulators, but since both have certain shortcomings, Nintendo either hopes that people get the actual systems to overcome said shortcomings or they genuinely don't care.

So yeah, don't emulate if you want to be on the safe side.

What, no 3, 4, 6, or Tactics?

Son i am disappoint.

Loved 3 and 4, i need to finish 6 but so far i like it, and Tactics was just all kinds of awesome.
Don't forget V that's a good game even though the story is rather average.

To be honest I don't really get the love for VI and IX. Obviously they are good games and you should defiantly play them, but they weren't all that. I found IV, V, VII and VIII to be much better games overall, but that's just me.

Final fantasy X wasn't too bad, but beyond that don't bother with the rest. That's the point of the series when everything starts going downhill.

I think FFVII is a good place to start for most people, although FFIX is supposedly very good as well (never played it).

Since you just have a computer though... getting FF games is gonna be tough unless you use emulators. In that case, get FFVI.

VIII,on an emulator.
I find it to have a wonderful story, even though it's very fractured. But,considering what the plot revolves around,it makes sense.
The gameplay elements are also unique, and innovative. Plus, the only character I didn't like was Irvine. And I'm a real nazi when it comes to how likeable characters are.

I'm going to have to say none of them. I never enjoyed Final Fantasy, and although I fully respect people who like it, I just can't get into it, mainly due to all the overblown spectacle and oceans of annoying characters. Then again, that is just the opinion of one man in one huge cosplayer crowd, being the only one who looks remotely normal.
I suppose I kind of liked Dirge of Cereberus, which doesn't come off as a surprise considering the fact that most people hated that game. Then again, I tend to enjoy all the stuff most people ignore. Maybe I'm just stupid for liking a third-person shooter much better than a deep JRPG, but then again, maybe it's just because it's Final Fantasy?
Not that I don't enjoy JRPGs, at least certain ones, but FF has just never managed to make me interested. I could probably go on for quite a long while, but that would almost seem intentionally TL;DR.
