I've only played FFX and FFXII (well i played some of 1-3 but they don't hold up to the modern version) and have to say I though X was excellent. Wasn't keen on XII.

My hierarchy (of the eight that I've played) goes:

VI (in a class of its own and the only FF in my top-25 all time games)
IX
IV
VII
I
a steaming pile of poo
V
II
Adolf Hitler
Satan
getting waterboarded
psychiatrists
VIII.

Umm... yeah it is. Sorry, but your logic there fails... if my car breaks down, I can steal a new one since mine doesn't work anymore? Don't think so...

Anyway, my favorite is VII... VIII I could never get in to either time I had it... VII, I regretted selling, but I have the ultimate edition or whatever on PC, and now, thanks to PSN, have it downloaded on my PSP... Also have Dirge of Cerberus, X, XII, and Crisis Core, but still think VIII was the worst of all of them... :/

So far, VI and Tactics are the only ones I've played, so VI gets my vote. As soon as I get my PS2 working again, though, I'm picking up X...

Final Fantasy X, the last and best of a dying breed. Nothing made afterwards could compete, though I admit to getting some foolish hopes up for FFXIII.

Interestingly enough my brother broke out Final Fantasy VIII just yesterday because it was one he hadn't tried yet. It has not aged well- lots of broken missions, confusing camera angles and way too much HP on the bosses. A shame, because it was one of the most innovative and I liked it when it first came out.

VI.
3d just ain't getting on me.

Give FF3(III) a go too. If you are not afraid of the simple (ugly, some might say) Graphics.
It was the first one I played and oh It has some great moments, revelations and bloody hard bosses.

*bite* 6000hp drains away.

I don't count Tactics as part of the "main" FF line. It's too good for that. Although the people of Ivalice have l...i...t...t...l...e...m...o...n...e...y and even less loyalty to the crown.

7 is way overrated. The first couple were great, better games and stories overall. Tactics had a great storyline, and tactical games like that will always be fun for me to play.

Am I just old or something? I cut my teeth on the first one, and played every one since, and liked all of them. So if I must choose I'd have to say the original is my favorite.

Of the core franchise my votes go to FF4, FF6, and FF7. All these games had epic stories and the most memorable characters and villains of all the other games. I need not reiterate the reasons that have already been mentioned by others.

My favorites of the non-core franchise would have to be Tactics: War of the Lions, and Crisis Core. Tactics is just a brillaint game that breaks away from FF's traditional formula and holds well as an individual game while still maintaining it's identity and qualities of an FF game. Crisis Core is an outstanding prequel that has a story good enough to stand on it's own and still manage to tie in well with FF7.

I've only played the older ones, so I can't really do anything here. I'm playing FF6 (or FF3, or whatever) now, just because of my massive boredom.

Yell at me for only playing three Final Fantasys.

As much as I'd rather not be categorized with the masses of FFVII fanboys and girls out there, I'm going to have to say that it was my favorite. I've been playing FF since the NES days (still own the cart!) and VII seems to have done the best job blending gameplay, storyline and character development (save Cait Sith, of course) into a fun and immersive experience. FFVI is second for me, followed by FFX (Blitzball!!!) and FFXII. FFIX is worth mention in it's refreshing throwback to the simpler fantastic nature of the game. At the very bottom of my heap, you'll find FFVIII. The game was just rife with inexplicable teen angst, a retarded magic drawing system and a final boss fight that just dragged on. Graphically it was a nice game, but that wont always save a game, as FFVIII proved for me.
