The only games that came out this year that I played were Bloodborne, MGS V, and Fallout, and Bloodborne is that only one of those games that I wasn't very very disappointed with at one point or another. So Bloodborne, which I would rank as the second best of Miyazaki's games so far. If anyone's curious, I'd probably rank them as
SS Tier: Dark Souls
A Tier: Bloodborne
B+ Tier: Demon's Souls
D Tier: Dark Souls 2

Strangely enough if I were to pick from games I played that didn't come out this year I'd pick Fallout: New Vegas.

Life is Strange.

Without a shadow of a doubt. It's also in my top 5 games of all time. The characters are well-rounded, the plot is fantastic, your choices do have an effect on the game (as you play it anyway, even if not-so-much on the ending), the ending itself had me sobbing bitterly, the soundtrack is brilliant, the cliff-hangers at the end of each episode are jaw-dropping... I could go on :p

Without a doubt, Witcher 3, not just because of the game's quality, but because the game did something that's been missing from open world games for a long time. It made the content inside the game feel meaningful, something Bethesda hasn't been able to do for years, and something Ubisoft has barely even attempted to do (oh, more towers?).
When I saw reviews for Fallout 4 and heard that there was moral ambiguity and a sense that the side quests were actually more than just mundane tasks to complete for experience and loot, I smiled and thought, "Thanks, Witcher 3". So, I chose the game both for what it was and for the mark it has left on the game industry.

For maybe the first time ever, I agree with the majority opinion on GotY! o_O

Witcher 3. Witcher 3. Witcher 3. Three times for emphasis.

Seriously, though, Morrowind was my gold standard for open-world RPGs since the month it released. The only game that came close to matching it was Fallout 3, but even that took me two years to complete, compared to the nearly two years I spent playing and modding Morrowind. Thirteen years is a long time at the top, so I was shocked when Witcher 3 so thoroughly blew my mind. I never touched the first two Witcher games and didn't know anything about the lore, so the game sat on my shelf for four months before I fired it up.

That was four weeks ago, and I'm still nowhere near completion because I can't stop exploring, knocking enemies around for sport (Death March mode is a blast!) and don't get me started on Gwent. If I had one of those real-life decks, I'd actually find people to play with. I've NEVER played card or tabletop games before, nor have I had the desire to, but I'd pick up Gwent in a heartbeat. And the soundtrack? It's one of only three soundtracks I listen to outside of their games, the others being Skyrim and Silent Hill 3. Everything about Witcher 3 is amazing to the core.

Game of the year? More like Game-of-the-Millennium in my book. Granted, it has to share that honor with Saints Row 4 and South Park: Stick of Truth, but there's plenty of room on top, baby!

I still haven't played Undertale. But until then, my vote goes to Bloodborne.

Can I say "none of these"? :(
Most of these games are simply sequels, and none of those games really brought any innovation.
Definitely with this guy, so I voted other.

I'd say any one of the half dozen indies I played this year showed more imagination in their design and execution than this entire list combined.

I shouldn't really vote, as I am still waiting for most of them to go down in price (namely MGSV, and Fallout 4, and Arkham Knight to damn well near free, or I won't be bothering as I'm on PC so far this gen). Witcher 3 however easily takes it without too much thought. Runner up for that would definitely be DiRT Rally, which officially came out last week. Think it will be on consoles soon next year though.

Had it since early access which I rarely do, unless a game looks in a playable enough state to offer some hours of fun, and boy was I surprised. Development was quick, good reception of fan feedback, often updated diaries, no bullshit DLC/season pass/microtransaction meddling with the development, and just all-round superb experience.

Just a solid, no-nonsense follow up to the DiRT franchise which I thought I'd never return to after DiRT 3. Even with the other racing sims I played this year, none came even close.

From that AAA list I'd probably say Bloodborne but my personal Game of the Year is easily Undertale. It's one of the most creative games I've had the pleasure of playing, it has a wonderful fusion of turn-based and bullet hell mechanics for its battle system and the writing is hands-down the best in any game I've played this year.

It's still a fine game, but in the shadow of Dark Souls...
In the shadow of what? Dark Souls being an overrated piece of shit?
Now, that's not a very mature way to discuss something, is it?

There are two types of people. Those who see dark souls as a flawed masterpiece, and those who don't understand dark souls. It ties together it's themes, story, and gameplay near flawlessly. As for combat, as someone whose practiced swordsmanship, I can say that the flow and timing of combat is quite good. It rewrote the book on game design, it's a work of absolute genius, in terms of combat, story, and level design.

Who voted for Arkham Knight?!

As with the previous fifteen GOTY topics, it's Witcher 3.
Is it that bad? Not played it yet with fact of my limited purchasing, i skipped it for Witcher 3 and MGS5.

Undertale.

Because, in a game with a dedicated combat system and no stealth, they made a dedicated system around NOT killing things. As in, the creator said. 'Yeah. Okay. Kill everything. If you want. But here's a better idea.'

Plus every major character, and even some of the mobs, are iconic as all fuck, recognizable as hell and charming almost to a fault.

Let's not forget the soundtrack. <3
