For the sheer amount of content it has, Reach. Campaign was fun, multiplayer improved and forge being vastly improved. It really is the best aspects of all the games merged into one.

In my mind, halo CE wins, by far.
For one, in multiplayer, the sheer fact that you can choose what you want to play, and who you want to play with makes the difference. I agree, halo 2 had a system with a combination of halo 3 and halo CE, but there where way more hackers that made it no fun, and, correct me if im wrong, but i believe halo 1 was the only one that was totally free online. Also, with halo Custome edition, you can get maps from every halo game and more (pluss make maps and weapons!!! how cool is that!) I haven't really tried reach much, so im not really sure about that.
Halo CE was the only one that had cool mods, and was easy to hack (adding a whole new layer to the game) The goal of hacking was to make the game more fun, rather than make yourself win (opposite from other games)
As for innovation, halo ce started it all.
Music... meh, i don't listen to music at all, so who am i to judge this
The story; they where all good, though i only really paid attention to read and halo CE

Oh, and dedicated servers in halo ce where awsome (moded snipers, tank brawls, etc.)

So, all in all, halo ce wins, although i have only played reach and halo 2 a couple times. The only thing i enjoyed about halo 3 was slayer and random weapons.

That said, I am still confused about the ending to Halo 3. Is that supposed to be Onyx he is orbiting? If not, what is it?
http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Legendary_Planet That may answer your question.

Also, Halo Reach for me. Gender optional, and customizable armor was epic win. CE of course, is the only second, as it started off everything after Reach, and set up the basic struggle to continue into the Halo 2/3.

Reach

Halo: ODST / Halo 3

Halo: CE

Halo 2

I voted Reach, because Reach had a number of huge innovations over the other games that I liked a great deal. Namely, the graphics overhaul, actually being able to (somewhat) create your own character and customize her for campaign, the multiplayer is more fun, the campaign is enjoyable and has more immersion than the other games, it had no boring Master Chief, and most importantly, it had no fucking highly detailed FLOOD in it to make me have trouble sleeping. Seriously, the flood creeped me out.

The major downside which I saw to it however, it lacked almost any of the humor of the older games. The storyline is pretty dark, gritty, and even tragic in a lot of places even. It was entirely too serious all the time. And the biggest drawback to the single player? Covenant no longer spoke English. Seriously, my favorite thing in both 3 and ODST, was to play with the IWHBYD skull on, and just listen to the grunts hilarious chattering and screaming. The lack of that made me sad in Reach.

Reach for me. Not much competition, since I've only got ODST and the Halo 3 Multiplayer, but I didn't like ODST that much.
The pretty pants campaign made me seriously consider giving Reach a go, but I'm glad I did. That was one doozy of a story.
Poor 6 and Jorge and... the others.

Reach and CE have the strongest campaigns but CE has a more engaging narrative so it got my vote.

Normally I'd say Halo CE seeing as it became a sort of archetype of the modern FPS.

However Reach = Jorge + Jetpacks

FLAWLESS VICTORY.

Well, your post says to me, loud and clear, that you're a bit of a fan of Halo 2. I will, however, agree. Halo 2 does ultimately, for me, come out on top, and while other games may perform better in certain aspects [Halo 3's music, for example], Halo 2 is the overall winner, in my opinion.

Combat Evolved.

God, what a great game. I almost shit myself in fear in that first Flood level. No other Halo game ever made me that scared.
Yeah, CE really sold me. I still haven't played Reach, but I don't see how it could blow me away the way the original game did.

It's also funny to see how far I've come when playing Halo. Now, I go back and do a solo run on Legendary and it's not even that hard. It's amazing to think how challenging that game used to be on Legendary.

Unless the others have a badass Zelda 64 mod than my vote goes for Halo:CE

It's narrative is pretty shit (oh so the aliens are the bad guys because someone has to? Okay I guess...) but it was still an engaging game all the same...

Halo: CE was the best if you look at innovation etc. The others do handle better but are pretty much carbon copies and so get a big fat zero from me for being repetitive as f**k.
Well if you played Halo:CE on pc, you would take that back. On PC Halo:CE handles amazing, but true on the other game's parts very repetitive. I really only bought Halo:2 & 3 just for story mode because it was the best part.

ODST to me had the best characterisation and the pistol was fun. Plus it came with a Halo 3 disc for awesome muultiplayer.

My favourite is ODST, principally because the campaign manages to nail the experience for once.

Granted it cribs off of Call of Duty and System Shock (and Aliens and Metroid Prime) mercilessly, but it's the only one that actually gives a feeling of being trapped and alone in a hopeless battle. It's also wonderfully atmospheric and the music, storytelling and gameplay all work. The absence of the Flood doesn't hurt either. Going back to the hybrid health system from CE did it a power of good too.

Chief based Halos have always struggled a bit in that the the atmosphere and downer tone is torpedoed by the fact you're a one lining unstoppable super cyborg.

CE and Reach have excellent campaigns too, CE is probably the most fun, but ODSt is my favourite because it's so much more interesting than the other games, even if it is deathly short.

2 and 3 were... disappointing, especially 2 with it's one hit kill memory tests and some ridiculously cheap design, let's not get started on Cortana...

Huzzah! Someone else shares my love of Halo 2. I've never spent more time on an FPS campaign before. Unfortunately, I never had live for the original X-Box, and by the time I did get live, Halo 3 was out, so that was what most people were playing. I never truly got to experience Halo 2 on live, except for the occassional night at a friends house.

I do disagree on Elites being scarier in Halo 2 than any other though. They are terrifying in Reach. They're so much stronger, and the Brutes being so weak makes them look even more powerful.

I've been told by a few friends that I should play ODST because that game is also Flood-free, but I'm a little dubious about paying full price of a game that was only ever intended to be a stop-gap measure until Reach finished development.
Get ODST second hand, it's great, but paying full price for it would leave you feeling short changed as the campaign is pretty short (my save says it took me 5 1/2 hours on Heroic).

However, it is very much worth playing through, it's the best (and best told) story (actually three different stories) of any of the Halo games.

I'd take what back exactly? I thought it was the first game to add a 2 weapon system, melee and regen health while having vehicles that didn't handle like turd.

You'd take that back if you played it on pc. I agree with you on the rest though
