Skill is more important, but luck can be really handy. The thing is, skill can be learned.

Sadly, not everyone is just naturally lucky. :p But personally, when my stats were rolled at birth, luck came up high.

Luck can get you so far but I would say that skill is more important. But mind you if the game is dependent on luck... I can't think of any though.

Luck is a skill, not one many master but a skill non the less. In games I prefer a mixture of both. In real live I prefer skill, luck is only my safety net (ironic isn't it)

What you're asking for is a bit of uncertainty, not luck.
A better player should always be able to beat a weak player.
Yet there are those who acknowledge the luck and legitimate talent of a good button-masher. Just saying.

Luck comes and goes, skill you can always count on.
How philosophical.

On topic. I would say a mixture of both. Even the most skilled players can play terribly sometimes. Lucky noobs can be annoying, but luck is what keeps some people playing things.

I'm terrible at TF2, but the fact I've been lucky several times is what keeps me playing it XD

I'd say skill, but every Fallout character I've ever made has had 10 Luck starting out and headshots like Vash the Stampede, soooo....

Skill. You can rely on skill every time. If you rely on luck you are setting yourself up to be screwed.
What if a person has 0 skill?

I'm just confused why people like RNG so much in competitive games. It's mind boggling that people don't want to win with their own abilities as a player.
Luck=casuals best friend
Casuals have 0 skill therefore cant win a skilled competition.
Diying a lot causes them rage but they can always blame LUCK, yes blaming others is here since the first human appeared, makes them ignore how much they suck personally

Winning due luck makes them very happy and believe they have skill while losing is always up to luck... its so funny that most humans are like this...
ok luck is very important as is skill. I think the best exmple of this is in starcraft if your lucky youll find your enimies base before he finds yours, but if your not skilled enoth to capitalize on that luck its usless.(BTW casual online game here and i do have skill not as much as some others but a fair amount so dont generalize us all.)

Both. Always and forever. Luck is a part of life quite frankly.

I mean, look at shooters. There is always going to be a luck element to them, because quite frankly, no matter what, even if your aim is perfect, there is always a chance that the bullet will not hit exactly where you aim.

As someone who has played games like D&D, I maybe am more accepting of this concept that others. In D&D, it doesn't matter how perfectly you play your game, a Critical Fumble is still a Critical Fumble.

Try explaining to an FPS player though that it doesn't matter that you aimed perfectly, because of a mechanic of the game based on luck, you lose, and they pitch a fit.

The more luck that is involved in a multiplayer game, the less you reward skilled players. That's bad design, in my opinion.

Another way to look at it:

Think of it like enjoying a good meal. You have the base of the meal, that forms the foundation, the meat, the vegetables, the starches. But by themselves, they're kinda bland. That's skill. Then you have the things that add excitement, spices and seasoning, that work with the foundation, but don't overpower. That's luck.

A mixture of both. Skill can be used at any time, but if you are evenly skilled (or worse, less skilled) then an opponent, then it wont hurt to have some luck.

Bit of both, really. But if you're really lucky and have average skill, you'll usually have a good time.

Luck is good in a competative gaming context because it encourages players to take risks and then rewards/punishes them accordingly. Without luck, there really is no risk, and if there is not risk, there's no fun.

Luck is the delicious icing, skill is the delectable cake. Each one is okay alone but when they come together it is mind blowing goodness.

i would say skill, but i have got to say a mixture of both for a couple of reasons. i'll list them as why:

Skill

-you should be able to beat the game with practice, and the better player should be able to beat the weaker player. if the game has no element of skill it will just be frustrating.

-there comes a great deal of satisfaction knowing you beat something hard, because you are that fucking good. if its down to luck entirely, you won't be as satisfied.

Luck

-finding something knew, discovering a new tactic from random button pressing, it may become skill in time, but first time it's normally chance, or luck. then afterwards you're like "dude, what did i just do?!" and so you go on to work it out, developing that lucky streak into a skill.

-in an encounter it is nice to have certain things like crits. i mean, it really will keep you on edge if you think its a walk in the park, then suddenly BAM! half your health has gone from 1 random mob! i mean, it can be a dick move sometimes, and something will just 1-shot you (lucky headshots from CODspraying are always annoying) but if it makes things a lot more intense, i don't see why random 'luck' events should be removed.

so, arguments on both sides here. overall i think skill based gamesa re more rewarding, but luck elements shouldn't be removed entirely.
