Poll: Which is videogames best sci-fi universe?

Title should say it all. Apologies if I missed out your favourite science fiction title, I really just picked the first eight that sprang to mind, and tried to pick games which aren't standalone.

I know Deus Ex is actually Cyber-Punk but screw it. It can pass as science fiction in my book. If anyone comes in here claiming that X or Y is actually space-punk or planet-punk or whatever the hell new -punk suffix is knocking around now a-days then I don't want to know >,<

I also didn't add Star Wars, or Dune or the like because these need to be sci-fi universes that had their roots in videogames.

Fine, I'll go with Mass Effect. Even though I think the "No Star Wars" rule is stupid.

I'm going with Mass Effect because it has the hottest aliens after Star Wars. Nothing beats Twi'leks, but the Asari come close.

Mass Effect's universe is the most fleshed out. By far. So, likely that.

But the Metroid universe has Samus Aran. And she kicks Gordon Freeman's, Master Chief's, Shepard's, and the the of those heroes' asses. Might not stand up to an entire army of SC units, but she could do tons of damage with SCREW ATTACK.

Would have gone Warhammer 40k if I could but I'm siding with Mass Effect on this one, mainly because I adore the ship designs.

I have to say Mass Effect, if only due to it's writing. The mundane technologies and alien races it describes seem so... plausible. I didn't pick Ratchet & Clank universe because it's more of a science fantasy (space not to scale, magic from technology).

Also, you might want to replace Crysis (a niche series by all accounts) with Command & Conquer.

No such thing as space-punk, plain and simple. Zat iz impossibil! Cyberpunk themes + interstellar travel is called "gritty sci-fi" or "used future".

Well i was gonna vote Warhammer 40K but its not there, should replace starcraft to be honest, then i wanted to go with warcraft but its not there either. Haven't played all the games but i guess i'll go Halo i like the idea of humans fighting for survival.

I will refer you to Episodes 1-3. Before those, I would have agreed with you. Besides, still fantasy. Space Opera's are usually sci-fi, therefore rooted in some form of science, and Star Wars has zero science involved.

Star Wars is what's known as Science-Fantasy. If it has aliens, lasers, explosions in space and such, it becomes science-fantasy. Science fiction is more plausible, things like 1984, or The Running Man.

My vote was cast for Mass Effect, despite it too falling into the 'fantasy' category (relying on the existence of aliens is akin to believing in demons and monsters and such), since it by far has the most vibrant, living universe. A lot of games I know love to add a little backstory, but Mass Effect's is the only one I really got into.


P.S: I do believe in aliens. I do. I do. I just wouldn't count them as science fiction since they're not that plausible.

Mass Effect from that list, I really like some of the locations like Omega and the Collectors abandoned space ship, I was actually quite amazed with the abandoned space ship, and spent a lot of time just walking around looking at the environment. I like EVE's setting too, I've only ever played the trial, but I like the whole idea of it being just a huge space of emptiness, with nothing more than asteroids and the occasional other player to keep you company.
