Poll: Which Left 4 Dead Do You Prefer?

So I've been playing a lot of the Left 4 Dead games lately and I was wondering which one the Escapist thought was better.

Personally, I think Left 4 Dead is better than 2. I love 2, but I think the atmosphere in 1 is so much better. The daytime campaigns kill the atmosphere IMHO. The new modes are nice, but I think the actual levels in Left 4 Dead are better.

The second. It's bigger, better, and has more of everything.

And personally, I never felt any "atmosphere" in either of the games.

Day and night? Who gives a fuck when you're shooting any and everything all the damn time.

I prefer L4D1 for atmosphere, maps and a bit more balanced versus, as well as slightly more serious characters.

However L4D2's gameplay makes L4D1's clunky and obsolete.

This also explains why I play a modded No Mercy in L4D2 (waiting for Death Toll and Blood Harvest to get released)

L4D2 is harder, which I enjoy. Has more infected to play as, which adds more strategy to versus. Also, I prefer to see where I'm going, which is easier in L4D2.

I play them both from time to time. Been playing Left 4 Dead a bit more, but I prefer 2.

And that Left 4 Dead needed RPG style mages?

The characters suck in L4D2 (with the Exception of Ellis and MAAAYBE Coach). The gameplay's also pretty much the same with some extra guns/monsters. I voted Left 4 Dead.

l4d2 is the best, 1 isnt bad by any means but melee weapons and the campaigns are more fun to me.

L4D2 has quantifiably better gameplay. It also has more weapons and items, more infected, more campaigns (that form a constant story, nonetheless), and more diverse set pieces.

L4D1 has the original four survivors (who you like better is up to you, but for my money the originals are the best) and arguably better atmosphere.

On paper, 2 is the superior game, but I have a fondness for both.

Most people either go for the atmosphere or the characters when I ask why L4D1 is better. Neither of them are particularly strong arguments.

L4D2 is just the better game

L4D1 is better at capturing the essence of a horror movie.

This is a tough question but I will say Left 4 Dead 2.

My reasons: More gore, More weapons, More Zombies, More Campaigns, More Variety and The Midnight Riders.

Left 4 Dead (the first one) is still a great game, the characters are better and the atmosphere feels better (although, you barely notice).
Left 4 Dead 2 just gives you more, and a zombie apocalypse should come with as many toppings as possible.

i never bought the second since i played the first one to death.

i may buy it sooner or later as i (obviously) really enjoyed the first. i just needed a break.

At first I thought that L4D was the best, but after thinking, I always preferred the original. It may not have more, but there is just something about it that makes it better, I just can't put my finger on it.

I hated both games, just shooting enemies over and over again. No fun and just gets boring.

Trying playing with your friends on a more difficult setting. I don't understand at all how you don't get even a LITTLE bit excited playing that.

l4d the first I think.

I HATED the level designs in the second game.
Wheras on the first I got together with my friends. We all had a character we liked the most and always played as, while we ran through much more interesting levels which suited the zombie apocalypse atmosphere much better.

The mechanics, weapons and Infected are better in L4D2. L4D had superior levels, characters (PEELZ) and atmosphere.
