I've never been into thrash, but my buddy is here and loves it so looks like I'm voting for him. Slayer it is.

Metallica sucks. Actually all of these bands suck. But if pressed I'd pick Slayer because they were on Viva la Bam.

Aside: Metallica isn't even thrash metal, it's whiny college rock that no one with any taste in music and/or self-respect actually listens to. Metallica = suck. Metallica gets about as much props from me as The Cranberries or Creed. Fuck Metallica. I plan on napalming an entire Metallica concert from a bi-plane that's flying a giant "Fuck Metallica" banner behind it while wearing a t-shirt that says "Fuck Metallica" on the front and "Eat Napalm" on the back and videoing all of it and putting that video on YouTube under the title "Fuck Metallica Plane lolnapalms Metallica & Friends".
I'm sorry, are you saying the LEAST sucky of the above are the ones to appear on Viva La Bam? One of the worst shows of all time made by one of the least funny group of people to have ever existed?

Metallica - Extremely over-rated, they had highs and had lows, and are finally back to being good.
Megadeth - Consistently awesome, mustaine is a prick though, Friedman and Broderick save him though
Slayer - Awesome, I mean come on their slayer, but jaysus they are monotonus, don't like anything they have done past 1990.
Anthrax - Your basic thrash band, very boring, testament deserve there place.

Megadeth get my vote purely because they were consistently better, even though I hate mustaine.

That being said, Megadeth played here earlier in the year, metallica are playing later in the year, Im seeing metallica and didnt see megadeth so take it for what its worth.

Where is the 'I hate all thrash metal' option?

(I do like Rolo Tomassi however :D)

Metallica. Yeah, sure, ever since Cliff Burton died it's all been downhill... but when they were at the top, they were amazing.

I could listen to Ride the Lightning (the album) all day long.

I am disappointed in the lack of love for Anthrax is this thread.

Long live Frank Bello! One of the greatest bassists ever!

I'd have to go with a tie between Metallica and Megadeth. Slayer I just started listening to about a month or two ago (by listening I mean two full cds worth) and they've quickly gone up on my list. Anthrax I've heard very little from and can't personally make a decision on whether I like them or not.

That's not exactly good reasoning to pick a band, just because they were on a show.
Also: basis for calling bands sellouts? could someone explain that for me? If it's getting famous and having a wide fanbase and wanting to please their fans, then technically all bands are sellouts.
Try telling D.R.I. that they're sellouts. Jesus Christ I'm not even into metal aymore and I've arleady posted 4 times on this thread. Guess I'll have to undust my metal catalouge.
Dirty Rotten Imbeciles I'm guessing? Punk was never dead and never will be ;)
I didn't mean to say that all bands were sellouts, I was just using an example to try and understand what everyone's definition of "sellout" was. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Megadeth is the best. They combined the ferocity of thrash riffs and badass solos with Dave Mustaine's sharp lyrics and unique vocals.

I always thought Testament should be there.
Quoted 'coz I second that!
Four top thrash metal bands is presumably different from first 4 significant american thrash bands. I'm choosing testament, you can fuck of with the whole "they were like 10 years late" thing. They shit on post 1990 Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax get boring and Megadeath are so pretentious it sometimes hurts.

I don't bother with classifying metal anymore. It's so stupid and convoluted now. Definitions of "Thrash" and whatnot are completely subjective.

For example, I find Megadeth to be far from Thrash.

The whole point of "top" four is that is was a label stuck on Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer (or Exodus) as the beginning of thrash metal. The Op wasn't disrespecting testament, it's just there is a specific 4 bands that are considered to have started thrash metal.

Some of Metallica's stuf is ok - thinking most of Master of Puppets / Ride the Lightning etc.

But for me there is ONLY one choice - SLAYER

Anthrax haven't done enough truely AWESOME tracks over the years (and of late have just petered out into truely average), and I have never been able to get into Dave Mustain (Megadeath for those who dont know) - a few MD songs are really cool and get my blood racing - psychotron / elysian fields, but NOTHING does it for me (almost a perverse kinky pleasure) like hearing Tom Araya screaching the intro to Angel of Death (opening track from Reign in Blood - best album of all time) last album was rather mediocre (Christ Illusion) but great to see the original group back together with Lombardo @ drums.

And to anyone who disagrees - Kerry King (of shredding) would kick your ass :D

This.

Metal more than any other genre insists on having too many genre names.

Besides, can't a band change genres between songs?

Anyway, of those 4 I like megadeth the best.

You spelled the guitarist for Slayer's name wrong.

It's Kerry FUCKING King.

Yeah, I'll go for Metallica - used to be a big fan, still listen to their pre-Black Album stuff.

People have been calling them sellouts at least since "Fade to Black"... They've changed their style a few times, yes - but if they were just copying "Kill'em All" for the past 28 years, they'd just be boring. Music lovers go through phases too, aren't music creators allowed to change the music they enjoy playing? I don't think any artist/band that's been around for more than a decade sticks to the same style.

Plus, I saw them live after my 'Tallica phase and they still blew my mind. They're just a great live band.

Back in the day I quite enjoyed the other bands. But since I haven't listened to any of them in a few years, I won't give a detailed analysis...
