I chose the original, but I'm not sure if I'd choose the very original, or REmake.

Surprised other games in the series like Code Veronica weren't listed.

I'm also surprised the 4th is the most popular so far.

(while I haven't played it) Yeah CV should be up there since it's the real RE3, the PS1 RE3 was supposed to be a spin off until Capcom made a last minute deal with Sony and the titles were switched.

Voted RE1

wow someone voted for RE6, sympathy vote maybe? :p

Without reading any posts I can safely say most will say 4.

I think 4 was the start of the bad times. It was the game to go from tank controls and scarce bullets, to weapon stock piles scattered around and not an ounce of horror to be found ... there aren't even any zombies.

1, 2 and 3 are the best, they started a whole genre!

My personal fav is number 3, nice range of puzzles (the water sample puzzle still pisses me off), Nemesis is scary, it had kind of QTE's that kind of changed some things and let you choose 1 of 2 paths, lastly Mercenaries mode was fun.

The new Mercenaries mode is crap, it's basically an arena with a time limit. RE3 you had to battle against the clock to get to a location to stop a bomb from blowing you up.

My personal favourite is two. As for which one is "considered" the best; while four divided audiences it does have a large fanbase and has garnered the greatest level of critical praise which appears to be closer to answering your question which is "considered the best?" not "which is your favourite?"

I haven't any of the games, but from what I've heard RE4 is easily the most well regarded. Also, the 3DS spin-off Revelations is said to be pretty good.

I voted RE1 (the Gamecube remake, mind you). First time through, sweaty palms almost guaranteed. I also really enjoyed speedrunning it after several playthroughs.

Yeah, I'm not surprised RE4 is really popular. I've played the shit out of it as well, but it's hardly scary. You are literally a one man army. And the story? Are you bad enough to save the president's daughter? The game has that B-movie vibe and it's not afraid to show that it doesn't take itself seriously.

For me, Resident Evil ended with the nuclear destruction of Raccoon City at the end of RE3. Wesker is still alive, Umbrella still exists. No BSAA bullcrap.

If I had the chance, I'd reboot the franchise at that point attributing 4, 5 and 6 to the feverish nightmares of Chris and Leon, whose psyches obviously took a beating. And since Leon is the one with imagination (and probably still a virgin at the end of RE2), he's the one with the weirdest dream (4). Chris just doesn't really like people of colour unless they're hot women. And RE6, well, that's just Chris and Leon together getting high on a long evening/ night.

Ahh, one is free to dream. Capcom, however, is free to continue driving the franchise further into the ground. How long till it hits lava?

I've played almost all the resident evil games, even them dead aim pieces of crap.
4 has gotta be my favourite but I like it in a totally different way to the earlier games.

I liked the first 3 a lot even if they were a bit simple and zero was fun to play even if it had the weirdest story arc.
Code Veronica had a special charm all its own and the gamecube remake of RE1 is awesome.

RE5 I did not like at all however, I've played through RE4 like 40 odd times, RE3 about 12 or so, All the others between 3 to 10 times depending, didn't even bother to finish dead aim but Re5 that got one playthrough I tried to have a second run but I just couldn't stay interested.

RE is the best for me simply because it was so note worthy when it came out.
Of course the newer ones have better graphics and game play but I always think it is hard to invent something new than to make sequels. (Of course making good sequels is a different matter altogether)

RE4 is really the only one I've played. I was never able to get in to 3, (which is the only pre-4 game I've played), and I wasn't a fan of 5. I really liked 4, but not enough to convince me to try any other game. The series as a whole has just never really piqued my interest.

I voted for Resident Evil 1 but honestly the Remake was better since it left the core mechanics alone but fixed the voice acting.

For me, it has to be the first game. The rest of the games suffer from what I like to call "Predator Syndrome". That is to say, most people agree that the first Predator movie was the best due to it's pacing. This is accomplished by the fact that - to a fresh audience - no one knows what the hell the damn thing is. You don't even learn that it's humanoid until half way through the movie when it picks up the dead scorpion, and even then you don't get your first glimpse of the thing until it's already taken out a couple of the main characters and the rest decide to try and trap it. There's a mystery behind what's hunting down all these badass soldiers, and that's what gives the movie it's pacing. With Predator 2, they couldn't really make a stalking movie (though they tried) because we already know what the Predator is. The pacing therefor comes across as forced, making it just another generic "monster" movie.

The same goes for the RE series. With the first game, you know nothing about Umbrella or the story as a whole, making it entirely fresh. I like the setting of the creepy old zombie-infested mansion more than any of the other settings, and the experience of gradually unravelilng the mystery of "What the fuck happened here?" by picking up the various notes and documents that give the backstory. For every other game, the cat's already out of the bag, there's no mystery behind the zombie outbreak anymore, and thus it they just become games about wading through the zombie hordes to reach the end and kill Wesker for the 17th time.

Why does no one ever include Resident Evil Revelations? It was really good and is a canon part of the series. From that list though 2, it improved on the mechanics of 1 and has a better atmosphere.

I know that most people seem to enjoy RE4 the most, but personally, I prefer the older style RE games. It's a close call between 2 and 3 for me but if pressed I would probably have to go with RE2. It had just the right balance of action and suspense.

To start off the best Resident Evil title in my opinion is Resident Evil 2 folloWed closely by Nemesis and CV. What do i consider the last Resident Evil title to deservidly wear the RE badge? Code Veronica X!

The series started going down hill rapidly since Resident Evil 4. You cant call yourself a Survial Horror, when the closest thing you have to horror is Ashley. Horror stops becoming horror when you add AI partners and spend most of the game in daylight.

The days of true survival horror in Resi are long gone and are never returning. Shame...

I love how nobody talks about Code Veronica. Funny as hell.

(Totally voted for RE4.)

RE2 because Claire is lovely.

Also because it's the most playable of the survival-horror installments with the most bearable plot to boot.

And Claire is lovely.
