Poll: Which Warhammer 40k Army?

I wouldn't redo the dark angels, at least leave the old models as they are. Adding new ones would be okay, but if you think your painting skills have increased, you can collect a new army as well, because you won't use models of both "generations".
If you want to play Space Marines, play Blood Angels. Not only are they compleately imba, they also have a small version of the Thunderhawk (Sickest gimmic to bring people to buy the new Blood Angels ... /ironie off)
I votet for Tau though. They are cool and every one plays freakin Space Marines, it's just boring. If you change the heads, even the battle suits look good.

Repair them and repaint only if the paintjob has been damaged. Think of all the money you will save. If any cock end complains about how Dark Angels paint schemes have changed or what have you then stab them in the face with their own shattered shin bones.

tau, its the bread and butter of the 40k universe and so very good when used by skilled players

Tau are similar to the DAs in that they're hit-and-run, but they are the clearest definition of glass cannons in the game. They are difficult to play and are not forgiving to mistakes. Not to mention, there are many 40K players that hate Tau with a passion.

It would be best to keep to your old army for a while, while your mates get settled into their armies. You may find you want to play something other than Tau afterward.

I voted to get a new chapter, because the new Space Wolves have some gorgeous models. That and there's just something appealing about a bunch of space vikings getting hip-deep and laying waste with glee, all the while giving the finger to the Codex Astartes. That's just my preference, though.

I say... repair and repaint. It'll save you $$$ in the long run and you'll be already able to play right away. But, if ya got money to burn... Tau is a really good army to paint. I have a freind who plays Tau... i always overrun him with Deamons.

Me though, I play ChAoS UnDiViDed, and Deamons (Khorn and Nurgle), But more recently starting a Space Marine army (Subjugators Chapter).

I say spruce up your old army and make everyone jealous. 1st edition models are cool as hell. Also, start a new army. I personally play Eldar (Biel Tan ftw) and have a massive army that I love like hell, and I constantly add new stuff (usually extremely sexy Forge World models, as I have everything I really need), but I always think it might be nice to try something else a bit. This might be doubly so for you because I'm pretty sure WH40K is a different beast to what it was back then, I don't know how familiar playing with current rules your Dark Angels would be. That and there's really no new Space Marine models that I think are really very striking to look at, unless you go Forge World (I keep mentioning that place, but they're so good! Contemptor Dreadnoughts look awesome).

I don't know if I would recommend Eldar. When you start, it's punishing, because they take a lot of precision, it's less 'hammer and tongs' like other armies *cough* Orks *cough*. When you get used to them, and you learn some good tactics, they're incredibly rewarding. The models are beautiful, I think they're the best faction visually and have more variation in colour due to the different Aspects. They can be a bit fiddly though, and unless you want to splash out at Forge World there's not much in the way of big models (there's only really Wave Serpent variants), even stuff like Wraithlord models look slim compared to a Dreadnought. I love them because they look damned good, the fluff is good, and now I know what the hell I'm doing they're great fun to play.

As for Tau, I don't know. I know people who play them, and I sort of find them to be pretty hit and miss difficulty wise. Once you get into close quarters they really are hopeless, but if you don't manage to get there in time they are pretty good at shooting the shit out of you. I quite like the design of the models but they have pretty bland paint jobs, so if you're into modelling a lot then maybe not.

As for the Elder, I dislike them. ( Maybe because I'm just useless with them? ) I tried a few armies of them back in the day and I just never really learnt how to use them properly.

I much prefer just stomping about shooting things and making explosions, than finely crafted tactics, that slowly pick apart the enemy.

There is a game night on at the local miniatures shop soon, so I may try my hand at the Eldar again, before dismissing them. ( Mainly because my old DA army ripped them to shreds regularly )

I'll admit, when I first played my Eldar I was like 'Shit, this is awful', but they're good once you get used to it. I tried a friend's Blood Angels army recently and I was amazed how easy they are to use, but I never felt they were as effective as my Eldar.

Oddly enough, when I picked up Eldar for the first time, I got to it like a fish to water (removing beardiness, I've regularly been complimented on how balanced my 1500pt army list is). However, when I tried a Dark Eldar army for the first time (actually right up until my sixth battle, or something) I had my arse handed to me in a fucking tureen.

Any, I agree, it takes a bit of getting used to, but once you get certain tactical maneuver/unit combinations down, it's very rewarding to see Guardians win battles for you... seriously, no one ever sees that coming...(!) Everyone just looks at the 'Quins and panics...

I have that problem. I started up again because I had a bunch of old 1st ed orks to paint to finally finish off my 5000pt RT ork army and an assortment of other models and a fair bit of Epic I bought at the time cause I thought they looked cool, thinking I would be able to have a little hobby that didn't cost me anything as I already had all the models and paints. What a fool I was.

i could never get into 40k, i played fantasy with Bretonians.

more just because all the back story made every one in 40k evil and i want to be the down trodden good guys.

Repair your Space Marines first, then possibly branch of into a 2nd army. I personally collect Eldar with a smaller, secondary army of Sisters of Battle.

I fully endorse both of them as viable options for once you've repaired your Space Marines.

Ok, I've decided that I'm going to start a small Tau army to get me back into W40K. I've looked at the rules for the Dark Angels and frankly, I'm disappointed. So, can someone look over my army list for Tau:

I might invest in Broadsides/Skyrays/Hammerheads aswell at somepoint, but for now that's looking like my base army.

Think my main strategy will be pin, flank and destroy. ( Hopefully )

I would like to know if the Tau units can tar-pit, this is a big factor in a few of my tactics.
