Who do you imagine behind the mask of anonymity as they fling passive-aggressive insults into you from the forums?

...

We tend to live in a bubble when arguing on forums. I have often found myself bringing up the fact that a sample from the Escapist doesn't reflect a sample from the gaming community at large, in the same way that a sample from the Westboro Baptist Church doesn't reflect the Christian community at large. Only the most argumentative.

That said, who am I arguing with? Are you all University students majoring in Philosophy? Am I in the midst of construction workers and mechanics on their lunch breaks? Perhaps everyone who posts here goes cliff diving on Wednesdays (I doubt that one).

This is the first part of a series I intend to create, adapting as I go (unless the numbers are uninspiring).

...

That said, with this particular poll:

Student/non-student
-If you are working, but take classes online at the University of Phoenix, put down "non-student."

Urban/suburban/rural
-If you live at a home away from home (college, foreign office), put the one most relevant to where you game. If you go to NYU, that's "student/urban", even if you lived in Nowhere before that.
-If you go to college now, you may feel that your campus has a lot of people in it, and seems urban. Or maybe you don't know if being near a small town means rural or suburban. https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/find-colleges/how-to-find-your-college-fit/campus-setting-rural-suburban-urban Use that and find your school.

This poll has no "I'm an exception" choice. If you think you are an exception, go ahead and say so in the comments. I'll make a note of it on my own personal data sheet. Or, more likely, I'll note that you're the sort of person who tries desperately to show how interesting and different he/she is, as I add your anonymous tally to one of the existing options and forget about you completely. So make it count.

Well, I am a university student majoring in philosophy, so there you go. Funny that you mentioned it specifically.

I'm sorry that you plan on working at starbucks for the rest of your life.

Only kidding.

Maybe.

As far as the OP goes, I think this thread is kind of pointless. The fact of the matter is that a poll of whether or not someone is a student doesn't tell you much about the person. A student could mean anything from elementary school to college and beyond, and saying you aren't a student could mean that you didn't go to college, or you've already graduated, and in all those cases you're going to get very different people with very different views and personalities.

I am a student in the greatest american city, Chicago.

I haven't decided on a major, but it looks like my concentration will be in Theology.

Not even close to a student. You're talking to a blue collared worker in this case. Live in a neighbourhood on the outskirts of a city in Northern Alberta.

I'm a law & criminology graduate (2010) working some boring records management temp job in the city (commute from the suburbs) because I don't actually know what I want to do with my life.

On the upside, I can sit on the crapper at work and browse the internet on my iPhone.

So I reckon that balances it out.

Student in a city in the Netherlands. I put in urban, even though my city is probably a small city by American standards. (164.000 people, area of a little under 60 square kilometers)

If this thread was made six years ago then I would of still count as a student. Anyway I'm a adult living in a rural area in Wales.

Student/urban at the moment, studying environmental engineering in Perth, Western Australia. I originally hail from a rural/suburban town, moved to Perth 3 years ago when I started university.

I live on a military base. Technically it is rural (that's what I put) because outside the base is a village and some woods, but it's also an airfield with several thousand people living and working there!

Also.... when do we ever stop learning or being students? ;)

Non-student (graduated last year) and sub-urban describes me best, unemployed layabout if you want to be precise but having a fair few interviews so I hope that'll change so enough, right now all I do is some voluntary work helping kids with science.

21 years old, dropped out of law school, now studying commerce majoring in economics/finance, graduating in August, will be then starting a Computer Science degree, and am living at home.

That roughly covers it, I think.

I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry and chemistry at the University of Nottingham about 2 and a half years ago (roughly) and currently working as a microbiologist (I'm having a couple of days off at the moment). I still live at home, in an urban environment. So non-student/urban is probably the best option for me.

Never went to college, and even dropped out of high school in my final year due to personal reasons. 31 years old, unemployed, and surrounded by senior citizens and their little white dogs.

I'm a student who'll hopefully get into university this year, and who wants to pursue a course in Psychology. I live in an urban area, or rather, urban by Malta's standards, what with it being a minuscule island.

I'm a non-student (graduated college), suburban.

It might be helpful to your results to have more options than just "student" and "non-student". As Dirty Hipsters said, "non-student" isn't very specific, The Escapist could be filled with 80 year old ladies (and have all the life experience associated) for all you know.

Student from Hungary here, though I am in the middle of trying to drop out of university because my archaeology degree would be worthless (and my parents/peers apparently never heard of the sunken-cost fallacy and still pressure me into finishing it up, go figure). Also, my village is about as rural as it gets. In fact, save for the capital, probably all of our cities would only be considered small towns in the US at best...
