Whomever said Sauron is wrong.

The real dark lord is Melkor/Morgoth. Sauron was merely his lieutenant.

Speaking directly to the text, Voldemort is called "The Dark Lord" almost every time someone is referring to him. Everyone else on this list has several nicknames, however with Voldemort being exclusively titled the dark lord by other characters in canon, I'm going to have to go with him.
Voldemort, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, You Know Who, Tom Riddle... stop me if these ring a bell

Hearing "Dark Lord," I generally think of your typical, black-hooded-cloak, manipulative, and powerful Sith-type person, an ominous shadow engulfing the lands in which his/her nefarious plots will largely take place. No one character comes to mind, just the nightmarish idea of a malicious being, which is probably fitting.

EDIT:
What really makes someone a "Dark Lord"? Reckless use of power? Big, black cloaks? Needlessly spiky helmets? I think there's more to a "proper" evil overlord-y person than ridiculous human resources and cartoon villian ethics. Looking at most of the listed candidates, I think most of them were trying to accomplish something more than accumulation of power. Vader supposedly wanted to improve the galaxy as he defined "improve", Voldemort (if memory serves) wanted to do the Magneto thing and exterminate those he deemed unworthy or something, Satan... has too many goddamned incarnations, (make up your own fucking demons, writers of the world!) Hitler wanted the "master race" to control the world, (or maybe it was just "be the biggest bastard in history," for all I know) etc.

I think the difference between a Dark Lord and a formidable, power-crazed fuckhead is having an "end justifies the means" goal (you know, besides "more money/power") s/he's willing to do anything to achieve and actually goes through with it no matter how their former friends and family look a them now. Of course, this also might describe quite a few anti-heroes and the like. Maybe it's the minions?

EDIT AGAIN: Also, if you ever wondered... "Dark lord of the Sith" Darth. I'm curious what "Jedi" is an abbreviation for.

If !Benjamin 'Yahtzee' Croshaw! is such a Dark Lord, then why did you spell his name wrong. You couldn't get away with that with a proper Dark Lord. It's in the handbook and everything.

Really? Sauron and Vader are always referred to as such.

I'm assuming you're a HP fan, and/or have not seen much LoTR/SW.

Who is the real dark lord?

The top 5% of banking officials in the USA. Most of them are in the FED, so they can create bullshit laws that are totally illegal in nature to skim money from the banking system.

OT: The giant squid man.

Uhm, I don't mean to be rude but I just want to warn you that some people might take offense to Satan being called a fantasy character.
Then let them take offence, they're perfectly welcome to do so.

OT: Sauron. He basically represents everything that is opposite to the good of Middle Earth.
I was going to say the Lich King, but Arthas himself was a good man so the character has too much moral depth to simply be the "Dark Lord".

Melkor, or Morgoth. The original Dark Lord in the Lord of the Rings, well Silmarillion.

Sauron isn't a dark lord. He just wants out of the land of infertile land and volcanoes. The TRUE dark lord is Ganondorf because he is so damn evil for no apparent reason.

Link: "Why are you trying to destroy Hyrule?"
Ganondorf: "Ionno. Bored, I guess"
