Poll: Why all the hate for Alternative Rock?

Everyone seems to think Alternative Rock is "emo." I personally think that there is nothing "emo" about it. I mean, sure, some of the songs are kind of... scream-y (I try to stay away from those, with the exception of Flyleaf), and some might have a slighly depressing meaning, but what exactly is the difference from listening to Three Days Grace and playing Silent Hill? Well, except for the fact that one you listen to, one you play, and one you watch. Again, I just don't get it.

So what I'm asking is this: what are your opinions on Alternative Rock? Do you think it is "emo?" If so, why?

Many dislike alternative because of the fact that it is the most comercialized form of rock

but that is just mine and everyone who i ever met and talked about this, opinion.

EDIT: I do listen to it, and enjoy some.

I like most rock, and plenty of alternative rock. It doesn't feel emo to me.

I really only have one rule when it comes to music, "If you cant sing it, dont scream it"

was there ever hate for it?

I like quite a bit of alternative but probably not anything played over the radio.

Depends on the band and how we define 'alternative rock.'

I don't find it (under my definition - largely indie) particularly interesting, and most of it sounds very homogeneous to me, but I hesitate to use the latter as any kind of point because I know a huge number of people who say the same about metal, my thoughts there generally being that they either can't or won't listen to it as music rather than as the noise they're used to perceiving it as.

I'd hardly regard it as "bad," though. It's not something I listen to or particularly want to, but liking it doesn't automatically mean you have bad taste in music.

I think I may be misinformed about the definition of Alternative rock. This is what I consider alternative rock:

Apparently the OP defines Alternative Rock as emo/Harcore bands which I despise because they have no discernable talent, they just blast off a bunch of noise.

Can we get some examples of bands that are considered Alternate Rock?
I.E., Flyleaf, Linkin Park, Evanesscence, Three Days Grace, basically anything that has been called "stupid emo shit" on Youtube.

How in the name of Steven Seagal are those bands "Alternative"? They are extremley popular!

That said, in terms of the atrocity that is modern music they aren't the worst. The singer in Evanessance can actually sing, I can't really say anything else about the rest of those bands (Former Linkin Park fan, stopped listening to that nonsense the second I discovered Classic Rock).

Anyone who "hates on" alternative rock is an idiot, not because there's not a lot of shitty music that can be described as "alternative rock" (although there is; see the post above mine), but because it's such a broad spectrum. Linkin Park, Explosions in the Sky, Omar Rodriguez Lopez, the Postal Service, Radiohead, and the Arcade Fire can all be called "alternative rock." No two bands on that list sound alike, and they go all across the spectrum from "orgasmically fantastic" to "suicide-inspiringly terrible."

But Flyleaf, Linkin Park, Evanescence, and Three Days Grace ARE stupid "emo" (using the term emo very loosely) bullshit.

Alternative rock is a label invented by promoters and record companies that doesn't actually describe the type of music at all. Linkin Park and Radiohead are both considered alternative rock and their only real similarity is that they both usually play some vague form of rock music.

I refuse to accept "alternative rock" as an actual genre because it simply has no defining characteristics at all.

Disclaimer: I enjoy many bands labeled alternative rock. I just hate the label.

Maybe I'm not in the right mindset right now, but I feel there's a difference between "why is Alternative Rock considered "emo"?" and "why all the hate on alternative rock?"

For the first one, I have no clue. For the second, either because they just don't like it or they are just ignorant.

Alternative Rock is such a board genre, saying you hate alternative rock is pretty much like saying you hate music.
