I always thought of alternative as bands like Bowling for Soup and Blink 182... I don't seem to remember anyone hating those types of bands.

That said, in terms of the atrocity that is modern music they aren't the worst. The singer in Evanessance can actually sing, I can't really say anything else about the rest of those bands (Former Linkin Park fan, stopped listening to that nonsense the second I discovered Classic Rock).
Yeah those bands are pretty average but some of their songs I can listen too. Also used to be a big Linkin Park fan but as soon as I started getting into classic music I just couldn't get back into them, their stuff just seems so weak to me now.

Foo Fighters is alternative rock, and by no means are they emo. Alternative is just a label for rock that doesn't know what it is.

Everyone seems to think Alternative Rock is "emo." I personally think that there is nothing "emo" about it. I mean, sure, some of the songs are kind of... scream-y (I try to stay away from those, with the exception of Flyleaf), and some might have a slighly depressing meaning, but what exactly is the difference from listening to Three Days Grace and playing Silent Hill? Well, except for the fact that one you listen to, one you play, and one you watch. Again, I just don't get it.

So what I'm asking is this: what are your opinions on Alternative Rock? Do you think it is "emo?" If so, why?
What kind of Alternative Rock have you been listening to?
I listen to good stuff like Foo Fighters, Franz Ferdinand, Shinedown, Jane's Addiction...
Flyleaf and Three Days Grace are good, but I wouldn't consider them Alternative Rock, really at all.
And considering my definition of Alt. Rock, no, I don't find anything emo about them.
Maybe Shinedown a bit. XD

To PizzatheHut: What the heck? Alt. Rock doesn't have any of those qualities... at all...

There is no such thing as "alternative rock". Something is either rock, or it's something else. You're asking me for an opinion on something that doesn't exist.

What? Emo rock is a tiny sub-genre of alternative rock, alternative rock is probably more broad than most other forms of music, it encompasses many diverse bands such as Nirvana, Franz Ferdinand, Smashing Pumpkins, Modest Mouse, Muse, Vampire Weekend, Beck, Nine Inch Nails, REM, The Pixies and Radiohead as well as many more and none of these could be considered 'Emo'. It's okay to not like a genre but it isn't to dismiss it based on a minority.

What kind of Alternative rock are you listening too where people call it emo? I dont know any alternate band that could be mistaken for emo.

It really depends on what you think alternative rock encompasses. For me it was everything from the 90s ... because they would always play it on "alternative" radio stations. Radiohead, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Our Lady Peace, etc. a lot of bands I like used to be considered "alternative" but are now "classic" because they are over ten years old.

Not sure how it could be considered "emo" since that made up stereotype cropped up after alternative rock was created. It could be people don't know what the lyrics mean and do not care to find out so they hide behind ignorance.

I mean some of the more heavy songs of the bands listed above have dedicated songs to people they knew who died from cancer, and I can't really rock out to that sort of thing. They might be emotional songs... but I'd rather have emotion than be a robot who didn't feel anything.

Just my two cents.

Alternative to what?

What exactly is alternative rock?

You mentioned Three Days Grace and Flyleaf as the same genre, which doesn't make sense to me.

Is Nirvana the same too?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_rock

I really love Industrial, and I like Grunge (to a point (ie: Garbage = YAY, Smashing Pumpkins = meh these days)).

I'm pretty easy-going with music, I can listen to pretty much anything...I don't hate emo, I just don't prefer it.

I absoloutely love alternative rock, it is without a doubt my favourite genre. OP, your definition of alternative rock is AWFUL - this whole emo/pop-punk scene is a small sliver of alternative rock, and it is one of the most embarassing ones, frankly (although, there are MANY exceptions). For me, alternative rock can largely be compared to indie rock, and within that wonderful genre lies some of the most talented bands to ever make music - Sonic Youth, Joy Division, Pixies, Television, R.E.M., Talking Heads, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, The Flaming Lips, Neutral Milk Hotel, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, and (the most important alt rock band of the last 15 years) Radiohead - I could go on, but no need.

The Indie rock scene has been, and remains to this day, one of the most vibrant sources of creativity and originality in rock history, and although it's hay-day certaintly was in the late 80s/early 90s, there are still a lot of great indie bands, and I would strongly encourage people to go out and find them. *Gives Alternative Rock a big hug*

Alternative rock doesn't exist.

There is nothing "alternative" about any rock music.

OK. This thread makes me angry.
1) Alternative Rock is a genre iTunes made up.
2) Rage Against the Machine IS NOT ALTERNATIVE ROCK i just saw someone posted that and it made me shake my head in disappointment. They are metal in the broadest sense, but rap-metal really.
3) The worst thing about pop-punk&emo, which are usually the real genres people are referring to when they say alt rock, is the song titles IMO. They're always a sentence long. So unnecessary. And they try too hard to be ironic.
4) I just saw someone list Nirvana. Also wrong. That would be grunge.
5) People who are defending alternative rock seem to have no idea what it means because they are just throwing together a bunch of their favorite rock bands which all belong in different subgenres.

I especially like it when it starts getting into the "orchestral rock" area: the sound of violins and pianos coupled with hardcore guitar is just amazing.
