I just try to make my little part of this Earth a better place. The only reward I expect is knowing I did a good thing. This is the only life we get, and I try to make it better for those I know and those that need my help.

I put ego, because if I do something bad, i literally can't stand the guilt. I feel driven to harm myself for any bad things done that can't be justified.

It sucks, because it never gets me anywhere. People hate me whether i'm bad or good.

Meh, why not?
It would take just as much effort for me to be a bad person as it does for me to be good so why not be nice to people?
It just might make their day.

You catch more flies with honey. Ultimately, it's a lot easier and more fun to go through life being personable than being an asshole or creep.

I dunno, I just kinda do it to do it. I guess it could be self-gratification, but for the most part I just do it to be nice; I'm not expecting a reward for doing that sort of stuff

I just do it for the knowledge that somehow, someone's day got better because of me. Doesn't matter how much, or in what way, just that it happened. I think there's enough bad things going on in this world as it is, and every act of kindness helps in coping with it. For that reason alone I think it's worth doing, even if, at best, I just get a smile in return.

I have been raised to be very empathetic, so making other people happy is nice, and being a ***** makes me... well, feel like a *****.
And I have enough to worry about without a heavy conscience.

The thread title is a bit misleading as you are asking why do you perform sacrificial behavior/acts of kindness and not asking why do you do what you think is right. If I think performing some action is the right thing to do why wouldn't I perform it?

As for your actual question I don't perform sacrificial acts (acts that have a net harm to me in a way I care about) so I guess I don't qualify to answer that question. I perform acts of kindness because I believe it to be a foundation of a healthy and just society.

I picked real world reward as it was the most accurate.

I do good things for the hope that I will be rewarded with no-strings-attached-thank-you-sex.

Actual answer: because I'm not a huge flaming dickwad. If a little old lady is trying to put her groceries in her trunk, you walk up and offer to assist.

A little bit of everything.
For me, ego and morals are what make me do a most decisions. Sometimes I it just to look like a nice person, other times just to be nice, sometimes just to feel good about myself, or finally because I think that it's the best thing to do. However my personal, opinionated, morals are based around our natural rights of life, liberty, and property. I believe, no, I KNOW these rights NEED be true because if I don't let other people have those rights, why should they let me have them.
Heaven is just icing on the cake.

It makes me feel good. Which is ultimately the reason for everyone. Doing what you think is right releases sweet hormones and stuff. Makes you feel all fluffy.

Because of my faith. "Do what is right" is a basic principle.

That, and I like helping out people when I can

Mostly simple altruism. Translated to redneck: "'Cause Ah was raised right. What, wasn't you?"
Silly as it is, it rings true for me.

Honestly, if you do what is right without a reason...that's just wrong.
I do so because I find it right to do, and feel good for doing the right thing...so...ego it is. :p

Well Christians say that if you don't believe in god you can't possibly know the difference between right and wrong so I don't really know how to answer this question..
I'll go back to my lab and work on my heathen sciences.

basically this.

although if i was raised in a very ignorant shunned down place, i do believe i would feel obliged to be nice or helpful, it's just not in me to be a asshat, it does no one any good, especially myself, so what's the point of not helping/being nice?

The real world functions somewhat like Bioshock. If you don't kill the little sisters, you might lose out on short term gains, but in the long run you'll get supply packs with way more Adam in them. Functioning like a responsible reasonable human being in society get you tons of perks and avoids potential problems.
