Poll: Why does everyone think the Combine of the Half-Life universe are retarted!?

They're depicted like that because they're the antagonists. Gordon Freeman and his followers are the heroes of the doomed and oppressed Earth and thus are supposed to be worshipped and supported.

Okay the Combine are mutated Humans transformed into soldiers, CORRECT?( if not just say so) SO wouldn't they receive like, dimensional class combat training, while the rebels had to rely on the skills nature handed them? Thats an advantage already. Also the rebels are basically wearing puffy sweaters and the combinehave super-advanced combat aremor that, in reality, would probably stop most bullets from the pistol, shotgun, assault rifle, and a crowbar. So most rebel weapons would not kill them so quickly, or even at all. Real military armor TODAY can stop a 10mm bullet, imagine that with futuistic technology. Also the Combine have huge resources, rebels..... not so much. So mostly what i'm saying is in a movie Combine encounters should be more...... extreme(avoid more than fight) and if a fight occurs it should be intense and difficult.
Ok, first of all, the combine aren't mutated humans, the combine are a conglomerate force of multiple alien organisms from a transdimensional realm (that sounded a lot less geeky in my head) the rebels admittedly, would have inferior training, but they weren't being led to the slaughter, they did have underground groups led by ex army types. (see the british style colonel during your first gunship battle, and barney, an ex security guard at a top secret research complex). the combine had superior guns, but the rebels could take said guns by force. the combine soldiers wouldn't have OMZG UBER ARMOR ROFLMAO because it would be expensive to produce, and let's face it, they wouldn't really care if they lived or died, they were only human. and a 10mm bullet is small, that's handgun size, and with sustained fire could still penetrate any sort of personal armor. think of the weapons you use in half life 2. shotguns, smgs, grenades, rockets, assault rifles... sustained fire from any of those weapons would certainly breach even the advanced armor that you depict. And who's saying they're that much more advanced than we are? obviously, they had the right technology to bring them to this universe in the first place, but that was just holding open an already present portal that WE ourselves had created. you see pulse rounds, and fancy displays and energy shields, but that hardly constitutes any sort of serious technological superiority. Even in a movie, you're forgetting that the combine are still only human, even more so with the civil protection, who are just volunteers, and the combat soldiers only have surgery to remove temptation, (food and sex) and to focus the mind (brainwashing to limit primal fear), meaning that at most, they'd be fighting level headed men with a similar training to modern day soldiers. that can't pee. So there! you just got outnerded.

Actually, not really. The Stormtrooper's armor is specifically built to only deflect glancing blows; it's a cost thing. Although why you need to worry about cost efficiency when you're the Emperor of the universe, I'll never know.

The only time you ever see the Combine fight is when they are fighting against Gordon. In addition to being the protagonist, which instantly gives you a huge advantage in every storyline ever conceived by man, Gordon has the suit, experience, maybe some sort of help, and a little esoteric technology like the Gravity Gun or Bug Bait, and tends to spearhead the initiatives the Rebels take that they know will really stick it too the Combine. In the actual battle of Rebels against Combine, Rebels are pretty much in trouble. You regularly see dead Rebels, but not dead Combine quite so often, unless they are due to Gordon. But even when it is Rebels versus Combine without Gordon, you have to remember that it is Asymmetrical Warfare. Combine are on unfamiliar ground, relying on supplies, and policing civilians while trying to root out Rebels and set up a base of operations on an alien world. Rebels just have to break shit in a sneaky way, and run away far enough to blend in. It's like playing hide and seek, except there's no boundaries and the people hiding can shoot you. Certainly the Combine are pretty bad ass, but you have to remember that even in real wars, Asymmetrical warfare is a *****.

Why do people think the combine suck?

Because their AI is programmed to be less difficult than US Marines from HL1.

In the first Half-Life, US Marines were elite combat units that were very difficult to take down. They worked together, flanked you, and if you took cover, they wouldn't hesitate to use their grenades. Also, their accuracy with the grenades and their guns were rediculous.

Combine, on the other hand, are pathetic in comparison. They don't take cover, they don't dodge your thrown items, they don't work together very much, and they make barely any attempt to run from your grenades. They just stand there and shoot at you with unremarkable accuracy.

While Marines were designed to be an FPS combat challenge, Combine were more-or-less designed to be fodder to your awesomeness, getting blown away and picked up by the super gravity gun, smashed by physics, and other things. The combine's threat to you is their numbers and artillery.

Let's not forget the fact that they perform several feats of stupidity, such as standing in front of you when you're drawing a car.

My favorite stupid combine moment was when a bunch of them were standing around, trying to snipe me with shotguns while I swung a giant cargo container cdangerously around them using a crane.

Here's the skinny. Yeah, we have armor today that can stop a 10mm bullet. You know how many people fighting wars actually have that? About, 10%, if that. Chances are that they have combine controlling the entire planet. The US can't even properly equip enough people to invade Iraq. I've seen some of the shit they try to pull when issuing gear. They cut corners because the good shit, is expensive. If the combine's overlords are anything like earths leaders now, they are going for cheap... and cheap isn't the STOPS EVERYTHING THAT MOVES armor... it's the crappy paper thin uniforms the combine have now.

True but couldn't they use the soldiers they have already created to be free working slaves??? Good point though

Thank you.

May have been said before but don't have time to read both pages of replies. Yes, the Combine can't seem to fight for sh**. But they don't have to. They are like the stormtroopers of Star Wars. They can be produced so fast and so numerous that they are easily dispensable.

Also if they were as powerful as you want, the game would suck.

They could at least stop rappeling off bridges in front of moving cars, standing on hilariously rickety structures and humping exploding barrels. I never liked that HL2 couldn't seem to decide if it wanted the Overwatch to be a genuine threat or a bunch of pratfalling clowns to send sailing through the air.

Yes and no, ever make a barricade in HL2 the can't pass a one foot high bench. I don't think the first Combine soldiers you meet have armour on at all. The ones in the black and white suits. They're the only ones I used the handgun on in the first place.
Ever get killed in the game? If you did they won. And if you count the Combine force as a whole, which I'm sure the Combine do. They have probably won more than you have.

I don't really understand your post... are you saying that the Combine are rubbish? The Combine are a galactic empire that travel from planet to planet taking the most dominant species and genetically modifying them, eventually adding them to their army (at least, that's the best theory).

The rebels have no chance against the full might of the Combine, but when Gordon Freeman comes back into the world, he sparks a rebellion, eventually destroying the Citadel in City 17. With that, and after the events of Episode Two, the Combine might is stranded on Earth with no backup, and there are more humans than Combine.

Gordon Freeman has the H.E.V. suit which can take up three times the normal punishment of standard armour. The rebels suck, but Gordon is very powerful, especialy when equipped with the gravity gun. The sheer number of rebels vs. the number of Combine is the reason that they could lose the war, and with no backup and rapidly depleting resources, what can they do?

Plus, the G-Man is always watching Gordon...

And as someone has already stated; it's a game! Don't worry and just play!
