I'd love a Steampunk RPG similar to Morrowind or Oblivion.
Except...you know, steampunk.
[sub]Although, to be fair, Morrowind had some very nice dwarven ruins and enemies that looked like they could be steampunk-y[/sub]

Also: Arcanum
I haven't played it, but I've heard that it was pretty good.

EDIT: Well, Arcanum isn't a very recent game, but it is still Steampunk.

Final Fantasy IX is my favourite game and that was arguably the most steampunk of the series (that or VI)
This is proof they can be done well seeing as both were best-sellers. It's suprising more developers haven't picked up on the fact it has an audience.

I dream of gunning down dwarfs with tommy guns o a moving train.

... That sounded better in my head.

I love steampunk... I am a huge fan. But the simple fact of why people don't make a lot of steampunk-centered games is that it is a very niche market. You can market generic fantasy or generic sci fi to a huge and varied geek crowd, but steampunk as a central concept is a fairly small fanbase.

A lot of games include steampunk elements to it... Many of them are mentioned above. The freemium MMO Allods also features a fairly steampunky faction. There have been a couple of attempts to make other steampunk games, where it was the central focus... but they are not that popular, and really haven't been that good.

But in the end, it comes down to money. Making a game costs a lot of money. And people funding that game want a nice big return on their investment. A steampunk game just won't sell as well as a more popular theme like fantasy or sci fi. So we're pretty much stuck with games that have at best some steampunk elements in them unless someone else decides to make a labor of love game and doesn't care about making money off of it.

Fable 2 and 3 fits the bill - although it's not a particularly deep RPG, it's an RPG nonetheless.

This is, sadly, very true.

I guess Arcanum is the only Steampunk game that we'll have for now...
...unless everyone suddenly starts to like Steampunk, but I don't see that happening.

Well, FF6 was Steam Punk.

Of course, that was a while ago now. A new steam-punk RPG would be wonderful. I'd approve.
On that note, Chrono Trigger comes to mind.

It's as stale and formulaic as any high fantasy I've seen. Dozens of buckles and goggles and pocket-watches on a character don't do much to entice me to play a game, unfortunately.

It's a very niche genre with fans who are typically very easy to piss off. God forbid you don't use the right type of steam gauge with the correct valve.

Because people are content to call Bioshock steampunk.

Some backgrounds and walls and whatnot were all cogs and gears and such, but that hardly makes a game. That would be like calling Morrowind steampunk because that section of the expansion where you head over to Sotha Sil's place looks sort of like it.

Because none of the developers care enough, I suppose. I've never seen why Steampunk is looked at as the greatest thing ever.

As a big fan of the epic (but okay buggy) Arcanum I find myself longing for a game that mixes elves and steam trains, dwarves and hydraulic axes, orcs in tuxes and evil gnome inventors.

Why has no one pushed this genre recently. It seems an obvious diversion from the Tolkienism that seems to be so intrinsic in western RPG's. I'm not a massive fan of sci fi over fantasy but after playing Mass Effect 2 I found the change of scenery most refreshing.

I know Bioshock dabbles in steampunk to some effect but wouldn't a Steampunk fantasy world be awesome fun and easy to apply to a game. Would other people like this or is it just me?

Edit: Changed the title for clarity ;) Sorry about that.
Try Resonance of Fate sometime. I think its steampunk but its still an amazing RPG and even for the short time I rented it I knew it was going to get good.

Isn't BioShock Infinate going to be kind of steampunk? Or at least clockwork punk. Bioshock itself was pretty steampunk. Thing is steampunk is an art style not a genre.

I thought that what became Zelda Skyward Sword would be something kind of steam punky or victorian, even- but then it just came out as another Zelda game with minor altercations and I just gave up on Zelda, to be honest... I'll play it one day, I'm sure- but not for many years, I imagine.

That's kind of why I mention Bioshock in the op It's the only one that sprung to mind when I thought of it. I have seen the trailer for infinite and although its mega nightmare fuel I'm really exicted about it :) Getting a new PC for Skyrim also, so should serve well for that too. :D

Alot of votes in favour atm...that's cool :)
