I think there was a steam punk RPG made by the people who did Fallout. I'm not sure what it's called but it looked pretty awesome.

Isn't BioShock Infinate going to be kind of steampunk? Or at least clockwork punk. Bioshock itself was pretty steampunk. Thing is steampunk is an art style not a genre.
Agree. In fact, "Steampunk" was really just a joke term thrown around by some SF writers (if Wikipedia can be believed, Jeter first used it in a letter published in Locus). It really wasn't supposed to be some hard and fast genre, more of a term to describe the feeling of such varied works as Anubis Gates, The Difference Engine and the films of Miyazaki.

When I overhear fans quibbling about whether something is properly "Clockpunk", "Steampunk" or "Flapperpunk" (ok, made that one up), I have to admit I think they missed the point.

As an aside, a writer friend of mine used to do a column for a technology mag about Second Life, and he tells me that there's an entire Steampunk world set in it (New Caledon, if I'm remembering the name correctly). I'm not really familiar with Second Life, but I don't think there's combat or anything like that in it. Still, might be worth a look.

Can you actually count final fantasy as steampunk anymore? the 6th one had the most of the series, and you could argue that the s7th one is, but the most recent ones are about hammy scripts, cringeworthy dialogue, and anime tropes that are painful to those who loved the series before seven like myself.

I thought that what became Zelda Skyward Sword would be something kind of steam punky or victorian, even- but then it just came out as another Zelda game with minor altercations and I just gave up on Zelda, to be honest... I'll play it one day, I'm sure- but not for many years, I imagine.
I thought that skyward sword was suppose to be the first chronological Zelda game. (At least that's what it said on the wiki)

I'm liking your orcs in tuxes idea. Who says a big, green-skinned guy with tusks can't also be a sophisticated gentleman?
Read Terry Prachett. Look for a troll named Crysophase. You will love his books.

Also, I love Steampunk. .Hack //G.U. was steampunk, absolutely perfect in the setting and weapons. Who says you can't have a steam spewin', chainsaw roarin' broadsword? Many people for one thing, but that's just because they're afraid of the sheer awesomeness.

Steampunk, and for that matter, even Cyberpunk, are not done well enough these days to receive much merit. But when it's done right, the ensuing product falls among mortals with all the authority of an angel on earth.

I'm pretty much asking for a well done one here aren't I, lets face it. Steampunk has just so many associations and possibilties for it. I think Arcanum's cross over with fantasy was really well thought out but it doesn't have to be like that.

That creepy, corrupt, semi supernatural feel you get from Dicken's novels is somthing I've always associated with steampunk. His books were often a commentary on the effect that the railway had on Britain so I suppose that's the reason. Those concepts of poverty, progress and change is somthing that was attempted in Fable 3 recently. I think it has a great possibility for a game out on it's own.

Interesting.. I never really thought of Bioshock 1 and 2 as steampunk, but now that I think about it I suppose they are! I guess when its an underwater city, seeing bolts and tubes seems NATURAL not supernatural, like steampunk. But then again you do have magic so, yes, yes.

However Bioshock isn't an RPG... and WoW barely touches steampunk... I mean, you have mounts that use it I suppose and guns... that's it though, most everything else is tolkien fantasy with WoW..

We really do need a modern Steampunk RPG!

Anyone wanna... start a game studio and make one..?

As a big fan of the epic (but okay buggy) Arcanum I find myself longing for a game that mixes elves and steam trains, dwarves and hydraulic axes, orcs in tuxes and evil gnome inventors.

Why has no one pushed this genre recently. It seems an obvious diversion from the Tolkienism that seems to be so intrinsic in western RPG's. I'm not a massive fan of sci fi over fantasy but after playing Mass Effect 2 I found the change of scenery most refreshing.

I know Bioshock dabbles in steampunk to some effect but wouldn't a Steampunk fantasy world be awesome fun and easy to apply to a game. Would other people like this or is it just me?

Edit: Changed the title for clarity ;) Sorry about that.
Honestly i cant get into steampunk, i mean its kinda cool but when it comes down to it ill stick to my tolkeinesque orcs and elves or my mass effect salarians and turians

I'd be totally into such a game if it's true to the Steampunk genre. It needs to be a lot like Steamboy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steamboy] or it won't fly with me.

Why has no one made a steampunk anything recently? 'Tis sad. There are, however, several awesome looking steampunk-related things coming in the future (hopefully they all come to fruition).

There is literally nothing wrong with your idea and I want it dearly. Also, I'm down for some cyberpunk. Would be nice to see a good rpg developer treat the shadowrun name with some respect.

Cant stand steampunk, found Arcanum very unenjoyable, would much prefer a cyberpunk to steampunk.

Another reason why I mourn the loss of Edge of Twilight.

Recoil: Retrograd had potential as well. Some would say Blood Omen 2 was steampunk, and I guess they'd be right. But seriously, we need more steampunk! As soon as the modern combat well has dried up, (which should hopefully be quite soon) start gathering from the steampunk well, devs!

Because whatever potential steampunk had was ruined by hipsters and scene kids.

That aside, steampunk is really more of a niche group in overall geek fandom. You'd have better luck drawing in a larger audience (and probably more artistic freedom) setting your game in either the fantasy or sci-fi. I mean, really, the only people who actually do get a kick out of steampunk as a genre are history buffs, literary enthusiasts, and (arguably) engineers.
