Poll: Why "soccer?"

I've come across much discussion on this in various threads, so I thought we should make this a poll. Why is American Football, which involves neither a ball or feet (most of the time anyway) called Football, while real Football, a game in which players handle a ball with their feet, called Soccer?
So, fellow escapists/football fans, should the name of American Football be changed to something more accurate, like Handegg?

"Soccer" comes from Association football, as far as I know.
American football should be called American rugby, imo.

Just throwing this out there, it's still a ball. However, the name makes little sense, but there's not really much you can do to change it now.

Football, of course, makes a lot more sense. Don't use football for hand egg.

You're thinking of the wrong game. Hand egg is the teasing name people give to American Football and/or rugby as football obviously refers to a foot and a ball. Rugby and American Football make more usage of the hands and the 'ball' has the shape of an egg. Hence hand egg.

They should call American Football American Rugby or something like that.
Football means soccer to me, (Or Gaelic football, it depends who I'm talking to really), But where did the name "soccer" come from? maybe it means foot-ball or something like that in ancient greek?

The English called Association Football "Soccer" and Rugby Football "Rugger". Rugger fell out of favor, Soccer has continued on in use.

So, it seems the majority of people here (so far) don't like the term "soccer." But I disagree on the assumption that it cannot be changed, after all it's only a word. If you dislike it, don't use the word, and call it football instead. If somebody gets confused, call their sport handegg/soccer/rugbyknockoffwheresweatymuscualmentackleeachothertothegroundwhilemostviewerstrytocoveruptheirboners.

Its simply a matter of local vernacular. We call it soccer, the rest of the world calls it football(which admittedly makes far more sense where the hell did we get soccer?). We call it the bathroom or restroom, other countries call it the loo or toilet. We call annoying jerks douche-bags, other countries call them wankers.

Long story short, does it really matter at all?
