It wron't fail, but a sequal was not needed. BioShock did well as a single title. This sequal appears to much like a money grabbing scam. It does not appear to have the come refining as the first. I mean, Big Sisters? That sounds like some lame Hollywood style trick to make it sound more "epic." It is like how in DBZ, every main sage got its own new power level. Cheap attempts to increase the scale and tone. BioShock appears to be falling into the bad habits.

Now you are just being pessimistic. Will it make you feel better if I run off and post how Bioshock 2 is going to be the best thing since sliced bread?
I never got what the big deal with sliced bread was.

Oh right Bioshock, he thinks it will be bad because it doesn't need to be made? Many games don't need to be made yet turn out good all the same.
Name 4.
That is a stupid thing to ask.

All it will do is show that we agree or dissagree on four games.

What made the first game more than just a slightly above average shooter was the twist (those of you who've played the game know what i speak of.) It actually made you think, instead of just blindly walking through the game killing things. I just don't see how they can efficiently reproduce that. The same level of insight either won't be there, and the game will be faulted for it, or we'll be able to figure it out very easily, and the game will be faulted for that. It's kind of a no-win scenario, if you ask me.
Jordan Thomas, the guy who designed Fort Frolic (the best level in the game, according to popular opinion) is now the head of Bioshock 2, so I think we can be cautiously optimistic that the great story/design/twistedness will still be present. It would be dumb to expect a "twist" on par with that of the first game, that sort of expectation is unfair to demand of a sequel (or any other game for that matter).

I'll rent it for sure, but I see no point buying a game that has no multiplayer. I can finish it in a few days and if it's like the first, will have no desire to play it again.

This could go either way. Il play it first before i decide to make a descision on the game.

But if they fix some of the flaws from the first game and keep it generally awesome i'l be happy.

I have my doubts about Bioshock 2. They seem to be focussing on the combat which was adequate but for me never really matched the kick I got out of exploring the world of Rapture and the plot.

Since I'm not a massive killing machine with a drill arm and a rivet gun, I think I might find it harder to identify with the lead character of BS2 than the original.

Then again, it cant be any worse than other sequels I could mention that everyone on the planet has an irrational love for.

Okay then let me answer your question by reviewing what we have seen so far
Gameplay: Hmm well the combat looks more intense then the first and as long as they keep the engine the gameplay will be even better because the first game was good
Graphics: first one was pretty and by trailers seen it looks pretty
Story: This is the only one that they might be muck up with the big sisters. Big daddies were a tragic and fearsome creature and one of the best enemies this console generation
Even if for some strange reason they do completely cock it up, Bioshock has a lot of fans so finically it will do fine
Now stop being so pessimistic about it and just wait till the release date.

It will be terrible rip-off from the first game that will rely solely upon the fan boys already generated by the first. Everything about this game reeks of a shameless cash in, from the downright lazy premise to the even lazier cop-out of making the player character the thing you feared so much in the first game, thereby removing any feelings of vulnerability when roaming around the crumbling Rapture, an underwater city that in Bioshock 1 was supposedly months away from total destruction but that is still seemingly doing fine 10 fucking years later.
When i played the 'medical pavilion' level of Bioshock 1 (my personal favourite mission) i was amazed at just how intense and well-crafted the game was, with the build-up to the first inevitable Big Daddy fight giving the entire gameplay a depressive aura. Though after this mission the game began to lose focus somewhat, with the obvious plot 'twists' and growing lack of imagination of the designers (Fort Frolic, im looking at you), the simple pleasure of searching through the lair of a Dr Frankenstien-esque plastic surgeon obsessed with pushing the boundaries of what we consider beautiful and the inevitable questions it raises towards our own culture and it's obsession with conformity still make it one of the greatest sections of any FPS in recent memory, something that i believe cannot be said for it's sequel.

I don't care about Bioshock 2. First one? I bought for 5 euro and I wish I didn't.

O MY GOSH! World of warcraft has people am locations from warcraft 3 IT MUST BE GODAWFUL
that's what this guy would have said before the release of WoW yeah... see where I'm going
now 11 milion people play it....(this was just an example btw but you catch my drift)
You shouldn't mention WoW in this context. From what I know, they're ready to destroy the lore in order to make another expansion/content patch.

When I first heard about the Big Sister facepalmed. It sounded like they were going to completely ruin it but from what I have seen of it now and after reading about the multiplayer, it sounds like it should be awesome. I'm still expecting the SP storyline won't quite live up to its predecessor though.

By "fail" what do you mean?

Will it make loads of money? Yes.
Will it get high review scores? Possibly not as high as the original, but likely to get high scores unless they make fundamental errors.
Will it make EA re-release System Shock 2 or start work on System Shock 3? Unlikely.

Word to the wise; don't insult the people voting in the votes.

Also, since the thread is about whether it will fail or not, you should be asking the same question in the poll.

As for the thread, I enjoyed Bioshock. I hope a sequel doesn't ruin the fun I had with the first one.

How could it ruin the fun youve already had, it goes back in time and slaps your hands away from the controller while you're playing Bioshock 1, is that it?

Metal Gear Solid 3 - We didn't need a prequel game, but it was awesome anyway

Shadow of the Colossus - We didn't need a prequel to Ico, but it was awesome anyway

God of War 2 - There were allusions to a sequel in the bonus content of the first, but it worked well as a self-contained story anyway

Half Life 2 - Not strictly necessary, they could have left the first as a single, albeit open ended story

How can they fail with Bioshock 2 when you play as a Big Daddy?

I fail to see the logic there....

The same way that Halo 3 sullied Halo in general for me.
Could you elaborate, i don't play Halo, how does it ruin the fun you had before?

All we can do is hope. God knows there's a hundred other games that I'd like proper sequels to and here's two thumbs up to a team with the balls to do one (if only out of sheer respect) to a game that wasn't really designed for it >.>

Besides that... everything looks on-par for now as far as I've seen, and the premises of Big Sister makes me perhaps a bit too giddy... for all the right reasons, of course. *cough*

Don't try. It's a fanboy thing.

They have fun and/or enjoy the first part of something immensely. Then - despite the fact they had fun the first time - when a sequel doesn't live up to the first, they seem to think they had LESS fun the first time. "Something died inside me and now it's ruined my past magic moments!" And so on.

See fanboys of Transformers, GI Joe, Star Trek, comic books, anime, certain bands, Star Wars, etc, as an example.

You know what'd make this game different and fresh? NOT HAVING A TWIST ENDING. The first one was admittedly fantastic, so instead of trying to live up to it, how about we just don't put in a twist? The twist would be NOT HAVING A TWIST.

But it probably will and it'll be something lame and semi-canon breaking like Tenenbaum being the Big Sister, or something. The problem is that would be a fine twist, if people weren't expecting a twist.

Bioshock is the movie The Sixth Sense, and Bioshock 2 will be every thriller movie AFTER The Sixth Sense. Arbitary twist-ville.

But apart from that, I think bringing a new perspective to the game rather than just having Bioshock 2: Jack's Back was a good move. I also think the vulnerability will be there, seeing as the game mostly revolves around you being stalked by the Big Sister, not knowing where she is at any time.

I think it won't be a failure, it just won't be as earth shattering as Bioshock.
