Yes, but only for data storage.

They are cheaper than a new 50GB pendrive.

And hey, we didn't think CDs would replace 3.5"s. I mean, CD burners were so expensive, and why would you need so much data anyway... hehe.

I also disagree with Khell, they only put off a minority of early adopters, in a time where either formats where prohibitively expensive for most. In fact two of my friends got blu-ray capability as soon as the competition died off.
I'm suspecting a lot of those who don't rate blu-ray haven't seen blu-ray. It's a futurama joke but I swear to god blu-ray is better resolution than real life.

Example. At the beginning of The Dark Knight in the bank heist scene. I saw that film 6 times in the cinema (yeah, yeah, I know) but it wasn't until I watched it on blu ray that I noticed the thread The Joker ties to the grenade is purple.
I am impressed with BluRay actually. I watched a demo of it (a scene from Speed) and I thought it was a documentary. It looked like live TV! I though it was a special feature on the disc but the resolution was unreal! Yes it is expensive, but so was EVERYTHING else at launch. Just a few examples:

Beta. but it failed.

VHS. It was very successful because of superiority over Beta. It had inferior sound due to a smaller read head than Beta, but the longer amount of play time on a VHS cassette allowed 90-150 minutes of play (i.e. a full movie) while Betas could only hold about 60 minutes. It held up past everything that cam to kill it: Laserdisc and VCD. It even held up in the days of DVD until the market finally adopted it.

Compact disc: It replaced cassette tapes and game cartridges and became a popular computer storage device. People still buy CDs for music today despite growing love for he old analog vinyl record (which I think sounds really good) or, more importantly, MP3s and MP3 players.

LaserDisc. it failed because of design flaws and did not improve upon anything enough to outdo VHS for is price and bulky disc.

DVD. it was really expensive. People bought PS2s until stand-alone players went down. That helped Sony then (but not as much now), along with the subsequent release of smash hit games. Finally when the players got cheaper, people grabbed them off the retail shelves like canned goods during DEFCON 4. Their larger storage capacity allowed them to replace CDs in computer storage and game storage.

To me, the Blu Ray is the next step. The thing is, even if you can buy film and music online and have it all digitally, there are a lot of people out there, younger and older alike (myself included) who want to buy their music and film in a tangeable form; they want something they can physically hold in their hand instrad of a screen that says "download complete".

I don't fancy paying about £500 for something that's no different to DVD.
...no different What?!? your kidding right, the quality is heaps better!
if your still on a CRT though then you may not be getting the full experience, but if you have an LCD, your really gonna see the difference DVD's look plain awful on LCD's the difference is like going from VHS to DVD, but hey i guess we should all be watching VHS quality movies because there no difference right?

hell i prefer to watch my movies on parchment too but you gotta move on sometimes

When we got DVD, it was a COMPLETELY new thing. No more cassette tapes, way more quality FAR beyond that of video, the difference was such a leap in technology.

Blu-ray is not a leap in technology. It is a young pretender showing off the same body but with new features just because he's not as old as DVD. It will be passed over somewhat, in fact I'm certain the only people who have blu-ray players are people who have PS3s.

Depends can blu-ray players also play regular DVD in a backwards compatibility sort of way? I don't know cause I haven't looked into but if they can then that will certainly help becaudse people don't have to replace their DVD collections while adding to it with blu-rays.

Well I dunno... There are some stupidly small differences... Ha.

But prices will soon come down, like DVD, I remember my parents saying this stuff when DVD came out, now it's flattened VHS.

After Blu-Ray, there's nowhere they can go really, except loading them onto minuscule disks or chips, or making them holograms or something.

At the moment it really isn't gonna happen, but if the prices of all HD TVs come down as well as the blu-ray movies themselves and companies stop making DVDs, then it'll change.

For all the people who are convinced blu ray will wipe out DVD, remember SuperAudio CDs? or DVD Audio?

My store stocked both these formats, both of them were going to wipe CD's from the face of the planet because they were so superior.

Facts are, CD is so good that most people either can't tell the difference, or don't care enough to buy a new system and all their old music.

I have zero facts and figures, only hearsay and people's opinions, but going on that, the majority of people just flatly don't care about the small improvement blu ray gives in quality of viewing and sound.

Before I'm laughed at, compare DVD and Blu Ray, now compare VHS and DVD, that's what I mean.

Sure something will replace DVD, but I sense it's going to take more than Blu Ray to really move the masses over to a new format. Especially when most of them remember re-buying many of their favourite videos again.

Unless there's something better, Bluray will replace DVD and get cheaper.

I don't think Digital Distribution would work because it would require really good DRM and pirates will obviously get to it.

True, lots of people seem to be against Blu-ray because they don't want to have to replace their dvd collections, it's not like dvd players are all going to self-implode if blu-ray takes over.

Did the DVD largely replace the CD? Yes. Therefore I predict change in the future. Maybe not tomorrow, or the next day, but eventually.
Agreed, DVD will be superseded in the same way DVD and CD now coexist, but will Blu-Ray do the deed? I don't think so, Blu-Ray may have won the high definition battle, but I think it was a battle for an elevated second place. A-, A for technology and benefits, - for exclusivity which should have been ubiquitousness.

Blu-Ray allows for higher density capabilities but for the most part, it won't replace DVDs. It makes good for video games, but for movies, they aren't going to make longer in theatre movies to compensate for the sake of blu-ray. Bladders don't like 5 hour movies.

As for games, they may be better off when they develop even better compressability, but I doubt it will "kill" the media.

Besides, DVD's aren't THAT behind and cost much less.

And they aren't going to make special features just to take up all that extra space either, cause people would get pissed at worthless stuff over well-valued special features for a movie.

I'm sure it will long term, but not during this recession or shortly after. When the tech prices go down, everyone will be all over it. As for digital distribution, I highly doubt it will dominate either media format. No matter how good it si, you will always have a demand for hard copies of media. Digital has its benefits, but having a hard copy with you just feels more secure, or some other term I can't think of.

I don't think it will over take any time soon. Not until something significantly superior comes out.

Blu-Ray is so dumb, its practically the same thing, only the quality of the video is enhanced. I can see it now "HEY HONEY, your gonna want to get in here right now cause I got 'Pinnochio' on Blu-Ray, its so much better than DVD!" lolz.
