Nope. Not when there are groups out that that religiously, fundamentally, and culturally hate other groups in the world.

Its just not happening.

In 1 000 000 years.
But still it'll be very loose "one planet" with everybody autonomous and special. And occasional unrest.

Even after the buggers come along, we will still be fighting one another.

Cookie for reference.
But atleast we will be doing it in space with entire fleets controled by children.
And stun guns and leg shields........... I loved Enders Game.

OT; I would like to think its possible. But chances are we will first be 3 nations one world with a big ass war going on.

Not until we are confronted by another race who has already done that, perfected space-travel and, are looking at our planet with that, 'I-don't-think-we-need-to-pay-for-this-land' kinda look.

I'm picking the first one, I know the third one is probably more likely but I really think that if we try really hard it won't come to that.
We just need more people to have the balls to say "lets talk"

It depends on how you look at it, and if anyone has the will to try and create such a system.

The UN is sort of the 'world government', but it's so inept it barely has any real consequence.

The EU is doing a better job of it, what with open borders making Europe feel a lot more unified, but even there it results in a lot of friction even if there are constantly new members.

But again, think about how you define your terms:

Is the United states of America 1 country, or an alliance of 52 different countries?

As the EU demonstrates, not having border controls doesn't automatically make you a single country.

I doubt France and Germany consider themselves to be part of the same nation, even though you can now cross the border without anyone checking up on you.

But I guess lack of immigration controls does do more for the sense of unity than any other feature.

In that sense, we might get there eventually, even if technically all the current nations still sort of exist.

If that's the case then who's to say we won't blunder into world peace by accident.

I can see it. Keeping countries is probably a good idea, just for the sake of ensuring cultural diversity, but I can definitely envision a world where we're not all either cutting eachother up or ripping eachother off. Maybe (hopefully) even in my lifetime, and that's what I'm working towards in my life.

Never gonna happen, it goes against the baser human instincts of greed and fear. Hell look back at history, the world isn't becoming more united, countries are sprining up constantly, usually from a rebelling part of a larger country.

There are only two possibilities I see the planet/a planet becoming one (you probably see where I'm going with this).
1: We're attacked by aliens and the world decides to abolish all boundaries to fight the new menace as one.
2: We colonize new worlds, and once we have enough, they would effectively become the new countries.

Sad really, how optimism and realism never go hand in hand.
Expect the worst while hoping for the best. That's how all good plans are made.

I try not to hope. Imo (and experience) hope leads to disappointment.
I try to do good as much I can. Trying to live a good life.

But (and this is on-topic again): there will always be people who disagree or even oppose my views, ideas and ways to get things done. Therefore I believe this idea of world peace will never happen.

Shame though

Interesting question this, will we ever get rid of the countries we know and use the planets resources for the good of all the people on the planet and not for just a fortunate few who live in a certain part of the planet.
This is two questions in one.

Yes, countries as a political faction is no longer significant. Continental awareness, such as the EU, North American Free Trade Agreement, WTO, the push for Aero (a unified currency for Asia) and in a non-geographical case NATO, is an emerging trend.

But for utilizing the resources for the good of all people? Capitalism gives the gun to the rich. Socialism gives the gun to the governing. A government body who runs Earth will not accomplish this with current economic systems. Do note that, however, the standards of life in developing countries are overall improving. Technology is not without merits in its progress.

I certainly hope not.

We need to have opposing factions to maintain diversity and avoid tyranny.

It's more likely for us to colonise other planets and go and be space-socialists there. It would also get around the whole multi culture thing that isn't working on Earth. We are just too different to get along. Every sect and ideology could have their own planet and everyone would be happy or at least happier.
