So I'm pretty sure that most of you are familiar with Half-Life and all so with iron sight aiming that most modern shooter have like, well it's pointless to make examples since pretty much every shooter has them now days. So my question is would iron sight aiming ruin Half-Life's shooting style? What is your opinion?

No, ironsight gaming is the way of the future.

There were mods, like Fakefactory's mod for instance that add ironsights to the game. I cant see Valve making Half Life still seem relevant without ironsights.

Yes. It would be like replacing Gordon Freeman with the Doom space marine.

It wouldn't be ruined, but it might be hard to make it fit. I'm sure Valve could handle it, though. Not that they would want to.

I don't see why not. Would certainly make playing the game on consoles easier, and would detract nothing from the PC version.

You mean replacing Gordon with some british guy with a mohawk?

OT: It just wouldnt work with Gordon, he has a crowbar and doesnt afraid of anything.

It would be funny if all the actual guns had some sort of sight attachment like a red dot, but it was un-useable, but you could iron sight with the crowbar.

Plus, ya know, iron sighting is for people who can aim with a reticule that doesnt bloom up to the size of a blimp.

It'd be alright.
The game feels a little archaic, even though it still looks and plays really well.
I'd like to see some updates, without changing too much.

Some Modern Warfare type setpiece moments might be nice, if done well.

No. Not exactly but actually zooming with most of the weapons will really help. I just finished playing HL2 for the fifth time this week and I couldn't help but notice where I ran into a lot of situations where zooming with SMG would've definitely helped a bit more.

For HL3, I think Valve should include the option of what type of aiming you prefer. Just like in Crysis 1 where you had the option between regular iron-sights and "simple iron-sights" that only zooms the sight without looking down the iron-sights.

The only weapon in the second game that could reasonably by used to shoot long distances (the crossbow) already had a zoom function. Everything else was either too innaccurate (submachine gun and pulse rifle) or too short ranged (Gravity gun, pistol, magnum, typical FPS shotgun, and crowbar, unfortunately). There's also the RPG, but that makes up for it by virtue of the fact that you can manually aim it. Simply put, the games don't need it.

Edit: Also, take into consideration that, for the console version, the current location of the zoom function is uncomfortable to use for standard ironsighting, and moving it to to the right trigger, as is typical, would mean displacing the "secondary fire" button. I'm not going to play the game if I can't fire plasma orbs and bullets at the same time.

Absolutely not. I play SMOD several times a day, which features all the original Half-Life 2 weapons (and then some) with iron sights, and I enjoy it far more than stock HL2.

Theres not a option to : no because the series already has been ruined by naging mandatory npcs and silly storyline aswell as shortened and recycled gameplay which even valve seems to have given up on (yay spend more on dota2).

Ironsights are always pointless in any game, the only use for it would be to use a scope as in magnification. It just makes it take longer time for the player to fire at things which is bad and is never explained if it actually increases gunaccuracy in most games as they all seem to have poor accuracy in most cases(like fo3). In a real scenario a person would go ironsighted the entire mission they were on (any military or cop does so not the hillbillies militia here.) , so it would either be ironsights ALWAYS on or blind fire hillbillystyle and hit nothing, if u want ur silly realism. One of the worst things is it hampers your view alot on screen when being used. And in a multiplayer game milliseconds and good vision are key which this feature does alot to damage. Also the mouse or joystick, whatever almost always slows down when the ironsight is used making itt extremely slow to look around which always is annoying as hell.

But silly ppl will always want to have it, heck i heard ppl who want to be able to look down the barrel of a tank when aiming, which is totally unreal as tanks use mirrors and optics to aim with not the barrel. some ppl just are clueless. really dont care much for fps genre, i just play my aptly named Unreal tournament for fps.

There's a mod for Garrys Mod that adds, among other things, iron sights, it's for the gun packs you can download. It also adds it to the HL2 guns. It actually feels good. It's actually freeaim, kind of like Wii shooters, but it feels really, really smooth and good.

If done right, yes, it would be awesome.

You can aim with the cross bow, but other than that you aren't doing long distance sniping, so it isn't needed. Most weapons are very accurate from their appropriate range (Magnum & Pulse Rifle at medium range, crossbow at long, pistol, SMG, and Shotgun closer up, and crowbar for up close and personal.

What do iron sights even add to games? All I've ever seen them add is a pointless delay between seeing a dude, and seeing his ragdoll blasted away. That and this idiotic "obscure half the damn screen" thing. Just because iron sights are the hip, modern thing to do doesn't mean they're good. They get in your way, impede the flow of gameplay, and prevent you from actually seeing anything. Oh, and every developer who uses this apparently feels you aren't allowed to run and aim, opting for having you "realistically" slow to a crawl. You can run while aiming IRL. Your aim just turns to shit.

So we've got a system that gets in the way, adds no value whatsoever to gameplay, but looks modern. Well, all aboard the modern train! Don't bring any new play styles here, it's all staring down gun barrels from here on out! Got to look modern, you know.

You know what else looks modern? Portal guns. Very sleek and shiny. Maybe we should put iron sights in Portal as well. Make you aim between the magnesium prongs, or the portals fly off in random directions, so that you can't fly through the air and get those neat panoramic shots of flipping through portals. But it'd be very modern.

I think not.

Not necessarily. It MIGHT if they use the same mechanics as other games, but Valve tends to be smart about that. Besides, I don't think fixing something that's not broken is necessary; if anything, aiming is cake in that game compared to most FPSs.

It would add to the game if done right. If done poorly it'd just be a ho-hum waste of effort. I'm a fan of the iron sight rather than seeing an imaginary reticle floating out in the middle of the air (that is far more out of sync than an iron sight).

I don't think it'd change that much in my opinion. I didn't exactly run 'n' gun in that game, ironsights would just support not running and gunning though.

Yes and no, I would use them but they would have to make sure they do it right.

As long as it wasnt the focus of the gameplay like it is in COD, I suppose it wouldn't hurt. Half Life though, is and always has been a traditional shooter. I rather like the fact that you literally fire like 500,000 rounds throughout the game (I read that somewhere) because way too many games focus on saving ammo and such.
