So Escapists, would you buy a game only for the multiplayer (not counting MMORPGS). I mean games like MAG. For me there must be a decent campaign for me to buy it, no campaign, no purchase. Also are there any games you've bought and played only multi, not the campaign?

No. I buy all my games for the single player, because I hate multiplayer in almost every form it takes. The only time I play multiplayer is if I am physically at a friend's house and they suggest a few rounds of L4D or Halo 3 and I agree. I don't even have online connection anymore I hate it so bad.

I bought TF2, I bought every Battlefield game up to 2142, all the other Valve Shooters and a bunch more.

So yeah, I would. I don't mind games being purely multiplayer driven, provided they're honest about their intent. Nothing is worse than buing a supposedly single player game and finding the 'campaign' is only there to help you learn the controls.

Only certain games which have no single player modes. TF2 was one. I play League of Legends which I guess counts as another. Those games I got but that was because I wanted them. Usually I will always look for the single play mode first and never by a game just for it's multiplayer mode. A good single player always comes first for me.

I would buy games for co-op. Because you need to play games with your friends if you have friends. But multiplayer is not about playing with friends it's about playing with strangers. Strangers who may not want to play with you or are incredubly bad sports. And at the price of 60 bucks I like the player experience to be contrable to some extent. So in short. No. Never.

The last multiplayer-only game I bought was Team Fortress 2, but only because it was part of the Orange Box.

I guess fighting games count as 'buying for the multiplayer', because most fighting games are boring as hell in singleplayer. Other than that, I'd never buy a game only for multiplayer.

Aside from TF2, its ridiculous to buy a game just for the multiplayer. I love a good story and to pay 60 for a new game, I need to get some real value out of it. What if I suck at the multiplayer, I just wasted a few days of work for a game that i don't even want anymore.

I'd never buy a game only for the multiplayer, but if the multiplayer is so good (obligatory: TF2) that it makes up for its lack of single-player (very rare by the way), then of course, I'll pick it up.

Damn does everyone on the Escapist hate multiplayer except for TF2?

OT: The only games I've bought without any consideration at single player at all are L4D and L4D2.
