I'd make a sequel, in a sense. I'd put in a completely different story, with a few recurring characters. I'd keep the core gameplay mechanics the same, but add in some new features.
I hadn't thought of that. Hmmm, maybe sequels aren't so bad after all.

You'd be an idiot not to make something that would sell
Or maybe you just have integrity. If you feel that the story is over and shouldn't be tampered with, it doesn't mean you're an idiot for not making a sequel.

Hmm. Seems like a lot of you would be willing to make straight-up sequels. But what about what Team Ico does? Making each game a spiritual successor to the next, that only very slightly links the games together?

As long as the fans want more it doesn't matter if the story allows it or not, it's basic business.

If you build a fan base that big and they want more, you give it to them. Even if the sequel isn't as well liked as the original it won't matter.

The Fan base will hand over their money without question, by the time they decide if they like it or not, it's too late. You have the money and sales figures will put the game to the top of the charts.

Who said about carrying on the story could keep the same name and create a spinoff or a prequel or another story all together

It really depends on the game and what's in it. If the story is absolutely closed and there's no possible way to innovate, then making a sequel is a bad idea. If there are ways to continue the story and innovate, then one should go for it.

depends how much money we're talking.

in the way that if i didn't get enough to retire last time round i'm going again

but if i did then id just create a new game
entirely new game.
based in the same universe

that'll do the trick
That's a winning formula right there. Just look at Final Fantasy.

Of course I'd make a sequel. The beautiful laws hype and capitalism practically ensure great sales, even if the game doesn't turn out to be as great as its predecessor.

If I could come up with a fitting story, yes. If not, HELL no. I'm all about story when it comes to stuff like that.

But, if I was to ever create a game like that, I would intentially leave room for a sequel, story-wise. Just in case.

I'd call it "[insert title here]Epsilon": release the same game again, but add a couple of new characters, some online leaderboards and promise it will be the best game ever and I've spent the past year making it and not lying on a Brazilian beach, "honest"

I'd make a ripoff sequel to cash in. I wouldn't make any new features it basically be the same game as the first with new characters filling in plot holes.

I don't really care what the fans think, I just want their money.

Definately.

But with a new story that is not necessarily a direct continuation to the original one. Make a cameo appearance for some of the main characters still alive in the first part, create some new characters and a plotline connected to the events of the first game. Connected, possibly by exploring the after-affects of some of the main plot-points within the first game.

And I'd use about as many man-hours to create that sequel as what went in to the first game. Better graphics, new models, new surroundings, new items and equipment, new voice-acting and brand new dialogues. Perhaps make a few changes to the core mechanics and gameplay, iron them out based on the user experiences on the first game.

I believe I would not make a sequel unless I prepared for it ahead of time. Of course, if I think of something else that may occur later in the same timeline, it may work.

Story first so I'd only make a sequel if the game was designed to be in 2 or more parts.

I wouldn't make a sequel just for the bloody sake of it, but the series would be as long as it needed to be. If it needed to be eight games long, it would be eight goddamn games. If it tied everything off in one go, that'd be it.

Okay, if I were in the business (first off, I would hope that I'd be working for or with Valve or Bioware), I would try to avoide making sequels just for more money. I would much rather go on to something new. But if there were a big enough fan base, and if I could work out a way to make a sequel that fit in with the original's story, then yeah, I would make a sequel. Improve on what went wrong in the first game. Introduce some new stuff if necessary. And so on.

I'd like to think that I have enough integrity to not make a sequel unless the story called for, allowed, it.

Maybe if I were making a tweaked sequel as well. Like w/ the Street Fighter games.

Nice choices. I wouldn't mind working for them either. :p And same, the only real pickle I have with sequels is that it lessens the amount of truly original ideas on the market.

i mean it' always very risky to create a brand new IP so if you can make extra profit with it and have a secure job for the next years and on top of that the story allows expansion, why not.
