My friend is joining the Masons and I'm fairly appauled. The main problem I have with them is that although they put up a front of being a charitable organisation, a more imperative aim of theirs is to unfairly attain positions of power that are not rightly theirs. It pisses me off that they get an unfair advantage over those that are better qualified and thus beter able to do certain jobs... especially when it reaches government level.

Also, Jim Davidson! *shudder*

What are your thoughts? Am I completely wrong about them?

Maybe he just wants to become one so he can become a Shriner so he can get the Fez hat and drive tiny cars?

Also I would never join, since I am anti-religious type groups.

Well they are charitable, to their own members. They don't go out of their way to be mean to other groups. My grandfather was one and now in his old age with he's health starting to fail they provide him with help

"unfair advantage" that's life, same as being born rich or good looking.

Plus if you join it'd be bloody useful to you, and the you personally can do all the good deeds you want.

Their not religious, it's purely business from what I understand

Personally I find their entire institution disgusting.

Besides I couldn't join anyway by virtue of having a vagina...

Nope, their religious. You have to follow a monotheism to get in.

I was not really sure. I got bored and looked up Shriners and it mentioned having to be a freemason and the way they put it, it seemed like it was a more ambigous faith-type group. But I would not join them anyways even if I could, but I also am not one to join most groups.

I never new that, although the one person I know seems to be bound by secrecy. I've never really looked into it in those terms, I just saw it as something that couldn't hurt professionally

You can accually join with a religion, if you are christian that's fine, if you are muslim that's fine. As long as you are tolerant.

No, I have no reason to join them. They cling on all sorts of symbols, rituals and traditions. I do not care about those things. As for discussing philosophy and all sorts of other things; I have you guys for that *hugs everyone* I don't need a club of old men with all kinds of odd habbits for that.

I would join only because that's the only way to finaly understand who they really are. But they would never have me due to being such a free thinker and constantly testing the boundaries.

I would fire people for being Free Masons (if they attempted to use said membership to gain position/leverage).

The entire organisation stinks, they're quite happy to be charitabe as long it's other masons they're helping. God help you if you're after a job, the Boss is Mason and one of your rivals is a Mason.

Like a lot of organisations it's not really aimed at anything but gettings it's members undeserved advantages. Everything should be earned on merit, I know life's not like that but it won't stop me trying to make it that way.

My grandpa was a Freemason, a-hole!

j/k

But really, what's the point now? Are they really still relevant in today's society? I bet I could ask 100 people my age and 99 of them wouldn't remember who they were.

All I know about the Freemasons is that one line from an episode of the Simpsons.

"Freemasons run the country!"
