The problem with this situation is that it'll never happen, it's a complete waste of philosophical thought that does nothing to improve or in any way affect your life. It may even negatively impact you since now you were thinking what you could do with the money you would have earned, and thus lowering your mood and wishing for unattainable choices such as this one.

I would press that button until my arm fell off. Only a hundred bucks? I'm milking that cow for as much as it's worth. Now, say it was the original million dollar button, probably 5 pushes would set me for life with proper investing, but now that you've lowered it to a measly hundred? It's not my fault you had to be cheap.

Anyway, yeah, I'd push the button. The way I see it, there are approx 2 deaths every second (and 4 births). Someone in the world would die whether I pressed the button or not.
There are 6.7 billion people in the world. The odds that it would affect someone I know is pretty minute.
Finally, (and I can't believe no-one in this thread has picked up on this rather crucial point). HOW THE HELL is pressing a sodding button going to kill some random person in the world? What kind of engineering feat would that have to take, and is it worth it??!!
Seriously, the moral aspect of it is all fail! The box couldn't possibly work in the first place & people die whether you push the button or not.
So why not make some money off some gullible sap?!

No way! What kind of system is that? You'd be doing nothing more than murder for profit with a button such as that, I could never use it.
You are over analyzing this however; allow me to break it down to the essential core so as to better attribute to being a philosophical thought. Offering a person this scenario regardless of the financial benefit is fundamentally asking their value upon human life over self indulgence. The button is akin to a metaphor between an action of altruism or egotism; the ultimate test to determine how truly ruthless and devoid of morality you as a human being - a terminology many would find difficult to address you as should the preverbal button be pressed.z121231211 said:

If you would prefer a realistic equivalent to the question I can provide such. In the world of business, allow us to imagine you have in front of you, the opportunity to overtake a company; in doing so the previous owner of the business will be in shambles, his family could be torn apart and he left bankrupt while you will be benefit from a significant boost in position both influentially and financially. Now? would you overtake his company having full knowledge of what may come in doing so?
Hmm that last paragraph is intriguing as it is indeed a realistic possibility. I may just make a topic from that. Anyhow would I press the button? I will admit for one hundred dollars, such is not difficult to come by. If it were one hundred thousand? I would not given it a moment's thought and especially not if it were a million.

It's a scientific experiment that tests morality. No-one gets killed at all, because the button is not actually attatched to a weird lottery/doomsday device.
If scientists were to conduct the experiment in real life, they'd need to factor in whether the subject is gullible enough to believe that the button will work. - It's like urban myths or superstition...believing something that someone else insists is the truth. Ever said "Candyman" in front of the mirror 5 times? I have, and guess what...nothing happens! Yet because of some tacky horror movie, kids were bricking themselves during halloween by stupid dares like that!
Perhaps if the scenario was slightly different....if it wasn't a button, but the trigger of a gun, and the person who was due to die was right in front of me & the gun, then that WOULD be a different matter, but as for the button iteself? Press press press, and claim the money off the idiot who thought I was gullible!!!
