I thought this was going to be about shutting down my personal account, which I will probably do some day when I can remind myself to do so, most of the time I don't even know if I have an account or not.

But I'd never shut it down for everyone, it's revolutionized internet communications by giving people a forum on which they can find lost contacts. I hardly use it for anything other than making snarky comments once in a while to make my friends (very small amount, probably about 20, I think) laugh and maybe send them a link to brighten up their day. Other than that, it's pretty useless to me since I've got other sites to keep in contact with people.

But it's a very useful site for a lot of people, so I don't think I'd be a dick and deny peole of something they love just because I have no use for it.

Turn off the computer. But if I have to click one button or the other, then I'd click no.

I would kill the power to my PC, and then boot up again, and then never touch that site again.

I don't touch random pop-up windows that has a yes/no button. Not even gonna try to close it. It's gonna end up being a virus <.<
Surprised more people haven't responded with something like this. Although I wouldn't quite be that severe myself... Ctrl-Alt-Del and kill the browser is good enough for me, but I share your caution.

However, if I was on my ghosted laptop, then I would hit "Yes" because it's been a long time since I've played a God-sim :)

I'd probably click Yes.

Probably because it would be fun to see all the addicts getting the shakes and everything, and because of dubious advertisement deals, the keeping tabs on absolutely everyone and such.

Realistically though, I'd suspect it of being an ad and not clicking it.

Even more realistically though, I'd never get the choice because I'm not on Facebook, and that's that.

Wait, why bother? Facebook is just the best social networking site and if you shut it down everyone will just go to myspace, twitter and bebo.

I'd black mail a couple of people then say no probably

No, why? People love it. That's like taking down Xbox Live or something just because YOU don't like Call of Duty. If you don't like it, don't participate. Grow up.
This. So much this.

Some people complain about being invited to groups, etc. etc.... Almost all of that stuff you can disable if you want.

Others have said they don't like social networking... Seriously? If that's true, then don't do it. How are other people using these sites affecting you in any real negative way?

Still others say stuff like "QQ, Facebook is just made for the popular people to feel good." Which is just plain bs. There are so many people like me who use it simply to keep up with friends in a free and very easy manner. E.g., friends I've met while I (or they) have been on exchange to/from other countries. I have friends in Denmark, America, etc. who I now talk to via Facebook when I can, without having to worry about the time difference. They can just respond when it's good for them - probably when I'm asleep. Other examples, too, but I cbf'd writing them down right now. :p
Yes, there are people on there who feel the need to get as many friends as possible, for whatever reason. That doesn't mean that Facebook was made for it, and (once again) how do those people affect anyone else in any real negative way?

For me, if you couldn't tell from my post? Hell no. Yea, there are other social networking sites out there, and I've tried a lot of them. Personally I find that Facebook is the most popular because it does it's job wonderfully. Better than most of the others.

And, of course, because of the post I quoted. Even if you still believe any of the above reasons for disliking Facebook, why would you do it? Just to spite people who do like it?
If you're a huge fan of a particular game, sport, hobby, whatever, but someone else didn't like it, got the choice to get rid of it forever (somehow), and did it, then what would be your response, praytell?

Finally, if you said yes because you'd simply be interested to see if it was real or not, or had a good reason for why Facebook is doing more harm than good, I've got no beef with you. :p
My post was directed mainly towards those who said yes simply because they didn't like it.

EDIT: For the record, if it did happen, of course I (and others) wouldn't go crazy without it. It'd be like if someone got the choice (and said yes) to shutting down The Escapist.
It would affect less people, obviously, but still. People would wonder why they said yes, then move on.

I've been without Facebook for extended periods before, it's not hard. That doesn't make it not a massive dick move to say yes, if their reasoning was simply because they didn't like it. :p

Nope. Facebook, for better or for worse, can be turned into a tool for social change[footnote]more than it is already[/footnote] and I wouldn't want to lose communication with people besides.

No. I used facebook to talk to my friends, keep in touch with people I no longer see so often, etc.
That said, even if I hated it, I wouldn't screw over 350 million people thanks to my own petty hatred. I'm a bit disappointed to see that the majority of voters in this thread would.

Oh hell yes. if I have a chance to permanently shutdown an evil monopoly do you think i'd hesitate for even a second?
Plus it would have the added bonus of forcing former facebook addictees to realise the existence of the wider internet and go exploring! win win.

Why? Just to be a dick? haha.

No thanks.
If you honestly can't think of better reason than that then I despair... really.

Hell ya! I think that site has crippled modern society in a way never seen before on our planet, it has annihilated the social life of so many people.

for god's sake people have committed suicide because they were being bullied through it!
really?
in the younger generation (at least university students) its done the opposite. You can organise parties and events at the drop of a hat with minimum hassle, heaven knows its the only reason there are multiple pub crawls which would probably not happen otherwise.-
Yeah because no-one ever managed to organise a piss-up before the days of facebook.....

It may surprise you young man that only a scant few years ago there were no mobile phones and no internet, yet students managed to get drunk just fine.

No.

I find this a tad ironic coming from a site primarily about gaming, where we spend forever listening to people's stupid fucking reasonings behind trying to ban games because they don't play or understand them.

Yes. I would do it. I am bitter and selfish, don't have a facebook account, and who says it is real? Plus the fun afterwards should it happen....

I'd click yes just to see if it worked, that and for all I know BOTH buttons do the same thing >.>

Or I'd click neither button and close the window, depends what mood I;m in at the time, right now I'd click yes though.

No.

I've said this so many times on these forums already; let people enjoy whatever the fuck it is they enjoy as long as it's not severely hurting anyone else.

For the love of god people, keep this in mind.

What bullshit scenario is this and who in their right mind would ever give blatant spam popups so much thought?
I think an application of suspension of disbelief is required for this theoretical debate, we're to take it as granted that the popup can and will do exactly what it seems to be offering.

I would just click the close button unless there isn't one or it?s appearing again later. Either way I would click no since I wouldn't take it seriously. I don't use facebook that much anyway so it won't be a bad thing if I click no unlike those who use it all the time.
