I would tell him/her. They're the ones dying. they deserve to know that they only have x amount days to live. But, in his/her final hours, I'd stick by thier side. After all, that's what friends do. two years ago, this ame kind of situation happened to me. My friend, rebbeca, was diagnosed with lung, colon, and some kind of bone cancer. As soon as she heard the news, she instantly called me up to tell me. Until the day she died (roughly 2 months), I waited on her, hand and foot. She could hardly do anything by herself. I felt bad for her. At night, since I lived just across the street, I'd walk over and make sure she was still ok. The final night, I walked into her room. It felt as if death was waiting for me just to come and say goodbye. She looked at me smiled, closed her eyes, and went up to heaven. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her.

in loving memory

If she died, I'd probably die as well.

But I'd tell her. How horrible would I feel knowing her fate and just letting it happen?
This, they'd want to do a load of things before they died. Like sky dive. And I'd go with them.
Forget the parachutes!

I believe every man has the right to meet death with their eyes open and standing on their feet. Albeit, so long as they weren't priorly blinded or crippled that is.

Doctors have to tell people they're going to die every day, I think you've over complicated the issue somewhat.

However I've always wondered if my friend was really fucked up with his guts hanging out and worrying he was going to die; would I try and comfort him by telling him it'll be fine and he'll live when quite clearly he won't. They do this in films and it bugs me.

I'd tell him/her, partially so they can spend all their money on fun, partially because it would be an intersting window into their personality.
