Ohk, so I am going to buy an Xbox 360 (No offense to the PS3 fans, the only border line between the two for me was the price range, and Xbox beat the PS3 with that, come on, even a lot of PS3 fans can agree that it's cheaper) but, I'm a little worried of all the problems with the Xbox.
Such as Red Rings of Doom, fan noises, angry PS3 fans gonna jump me, etc.
I already have a Wii and I need a new system.
Is the Xbox going to be a better investment?
And if so, how would i prevent ROD?

PC > consoles

Become more of a PC gamer, but if I have to choose, 360.

I read this on this site... if you take apart the XBox and place a washer in between the two X-rings, it will prevent it from overheating and thus solve the RROD.

I've had my 360 since Dec '07 and nothing has happened to it yet. Not a single red light or problem.. except that I can't get XBL because of the way my house recieves its internet.

I've had an Xbox for 2 years now, it red ringed once, and I got it back 3 weeks later, fully repaired free of charge. So if you are worried about your xbox failing, all I can say is unless you can't go without games for more than a couple days, you should be fine. (escpecially since you hace a wii to keep you occupied anyway.)

as for PS3 fans, I still get into arguments, but the only solid arguments I've heard are MGS4 and reliability. the rest can be easily countered or explained.

Oh, and DO NOT try any towell wrapping solution bollocks, the best you'll do is void the warranty. just send it to MS and they'll fix it for free if it is a red ring.

Tally up all the games you want to play on each system. Then remember that for the price of a PS3, you can afford several of the 360 games in the list. Make your decision based on this.

I've found the PS3 to be the better investment. But if you don't want to wait go ahead and get the 360. The newer models supposedly no longer have the red rind of death and the install option quiets the fan down.

I still think the worst arguement is price. PS3 is cheaper once you figure in accessories. But besides that fact, go with whichever type of gamer you are. 360 is for more hardcore gamers where PS3 is for more casual gamers looking for multi-entertainment.

I speak from experience: Co-op on the couch is something PC gaming sorely lacks, and immersion is great when you can play in bed. It's like a bedtime story! :B

I was a PC gaming type for the longest time, but I like couches too much now to ever go back fully.

Oh, right, thread topic. I think 360 is a pretty cool guy, eh red rings sometimes but doesn't afraid of anything.

When I bought the xbox it was awesome, its fun, with so many games to play, I love playing my music in game. The Xbox controler is so much better than the wii or PS3. It was truly fantastic, NOT A PROBLEM. Then that stupid freekin update came with Tom Clancys: HAWX (also a really freekin cool game). This "update" as they called it CRASHES GTA3 CONSTANTLY! Seriously, do microsoft just run around with keyboards up there arses and HOPE TO GOD that the keys make some kind of code in there colon???????

Don't worry about the Red Ring Of Death, Microsoft was kind enough to fix that!
Repair FAQ [http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/repairfaqs.aspx]

"What types of repairs are covered by the Xbox Warranty?
One Year Express Warranty on Console (Three Years for Three Flashing Red Lights)."

They warranty your xbox for 3 years after purchase if you get the red ring!

Worse case scenario you can always DIY repair it, more than a few people I know have.

If I had to do it all over again (and the ps3 was at its current price and not its 600 price when I got 360) I would get a PS3. Mostly just do to the noise, the 360 is really loud even without the dvd drive running. I had a launch 360 that I got refurbished that that RROD last month, found out the 3 year warranty doesn't cover refurbished models. If I didn't already have 20+ 360 games I would of got a PS3 to replace it.

To be honest however, it's more of a grass is greener type thing for me

There is apparently no way to avoid the rrod, but due to it being a problem caused by heat, you can take a few steps:

Keep it away from the wall. At least a foot or two.

Keep it flat. NOT VERTICAL. (this is official advice I got from microsoft). It can scratch your discs too if its vertical.

Make sure all the vents are exposed and have room to, er, vent.

I keep mine on two pillars of vhs boxes to keep it away from the carpet. Carpets are bad!

Let it cool down after every 2-3 hours use.

Best of luck...

Get extended warranty. After that you're fine. I had my original for ages before it finally died (not even RROD) worst case, you get it repaired once or twice. Just try to buy a newer console, they tend to break less.

Its utterly stupid. "let it cool down after every 2-3 hours of use"
I mean COME ON Microsoft, why is it so hard for them to get it right the first time?!?

I am on my 4th 360 and still happy with it.

1st one red ringed (after having it for about 1.5 years) and we had a warranty bought through the store, so we went and got a new one. The new one was defective so we returned it a couple of days later (I don't count that one). The second one lasted just under a year untill it also red ringed. Went to same store, warranty in hand, and got another new one. 3rd one actually overheated (2 red lights, not 3) and we tried a DIY repair because the warranty was up. Unable to repair it so we slapped down the cash for 360 #4, and I do not regret it a bit!

Hmm if you mean that letting it cool down is stupid then you are silly, but if you mean that microsoft are stupid for putting gamers in a position where they need to stop playing every few hours to avoid console death then you are dead right.
