I barely notice and when someone starts running their mouth or being generally annoying I just mute them. If you end up with them again they even stay muted.

Well.....
Most people do not talk anyways
Most people who do talk should not be allowed to.
I like my friends but do not always play the same games.

No, XBOX live died and became a hostile wasteland when developers stopped letting people make custom games with a host to pick the map and game type like in COD2 and made everything automatic. The sense of community died then.

I remember playing a 2hour long, infinite score 6v6 match in COD2. That what made the game so fun.You could play however you want.

XBL is an interesting idea, but it needs a general social hub sort of like what "Playstation Home" should have been.

I say this because as someone pointed out typically people are locked into their own parties and want to deal with people they already know. Add to this that the retard population is high and the people you generally run into who aren't in parties just want to curse and be obnoxious, and it's really not a great enviroment for getting to know anyone anymore.

I think having a social hub to meet up with gamers, figure out who is a retard and who isn't, and find people to play with outside of the actual games might not be a bad idea.

Of course to be functional I think such a hub needs to have more to it than "Playstation Home" does.

The party chat system really ruined live. I miss the old days.
I have to ask how it ruined live, if anything it improved it. If I want to go play Red Faction: Guerrilla, but still want to talk to my friends, I can do that. It also has better sound sensitivity (don't need to talk as loud to be heard by people in parties).

I admit it's annoying when a bunch of people join a team oriented game, and they're all in a party. But this doesn't happen very often, and if they really don't want to talk to you that's their choice, and if it's that important then you can ask to join their party so you can coordinate, either that or you can tough it out.

I don't know exactly why you dislike the party chat system, but that's your right, I personally love it.

OT: I miss the old layout when there weren't any lame Avatars... although they aren't that bad, and it's funny making them look freaky. I also notice that much of the community has degraded since the old days, but that's because the younger kids got access and learned words that they shouldn't even be hearing for another 6 years.

I suggest word recognizing microphones: It would detect swear words used in excess. Like the system found in most cell phones. Life would be amazing afterwords.

in theory your rant is 100% correct but in practice too man trolls now have XBL accounts so your choices are either being in a party bubble with intelligent people you know or muting everyone in the game lobby or listening to either A) complete silence except for the occasional cry of *(***(&f N00B *(&&( YOU *&())," B) someone talking trash in an 8 year olds voice, or C) irritating noises made into the mike

didn't directly think about it before, but i suppose you are correct about that, party chat (even though i heavily used it for a long time) really ruined any kind of friendly anomity among random xbox live goers, now its all "leet youngsters" or just plain douchebags with too much time on there hands to ruin everyone elses experience..

please just fucking make boot buttons possible for teams, its really not that hard, and its really not that hard to follow a code of honor not to boot someone unless they really are being a douche.

I dunno man. Your theory sounds plausible, but then again, I seem to recall Xbox LIVE was full of douchebags before the party system was introduced too. Maybe the 'golden age' was before my time, I've only been on LIVE about two years.
I do think the party system definitely has negative consequences though. It kills teamwork in games like TF2. If everyone's in parties they don't communicate with the rest of their team anymore, so that makes it very difficult to coordinate attacks or devise strategies together. It's a real shame.

They can't handle having a mic in the first place.

I don't think they can handle having the power to boot somebody.

When me and my friends play, we always switch to game chat when we are in the same game.

My first experience with live was back well before the xbox 360 was released...it was far from accommodating then, sure there was an occasional non douchebag player, and at times it was even worth the delay caused by matchmaking across the pacific to play with them, but on the whole it was a gigantic waste of time and effort.

I didn't have enough friends I know to warrant buying it, so I chose (early) to not bother with the online. I've played it several times at friends houses/free trials since, and I've always had pretty well the same experience.

Whenever I'm playing a game on LIVE, I'm either in Private Chat, Party Chat, or just don't keep my mic plugged in after too many experiences of general annoyance over LIVE. Then again, when I used to talk in game-chat, there were nice people every now and again.

You can't say that all douchebags hang around on Xbox Live, as it's the players , not the game itself. If these people were all on a PS3, they aren't going to be any less annoying than they are on Xxbox Live.

I remember when I first got my 360 and Halo 3 (about a year after the game came out) and a few games in I ran into some dude who loved the "Really British quips" I was coming out with. Genuinely though, we were enjoying cruising the games and just having fun, and we picked up another person along the way.

Was a good evening, and I played for hours. Party chat is a double edged sword. I'm not sure I'd axe it though.

This argument is not new in the world of online gaming.

It's the same as the Global Chat in any MMO or (as it was labeled in WoW) Barrens. Guilds and Parties happily socialize amongst each other, while the Global chat is the place you'd rather remove from your chat window, lest your eyes start bleeding and your brain melts with your moms and no us.

The only upside here is that it's not completely sealed off by the restriction of voice chat only. Friendly faces will once in a while come to the rescue of the lone sheep lost amongst the wolves.

I think it depends what kind of game you play. If you play games like Call of Duty it's always going to be highly competitive, and this is going to cause arguments and disagreements. Personally I think it's all down to your attitude, only the people playing on Xbox live can change the atmosphere. And it's up to all the players to police the community themselves by reporting those that need reporting and by playing sensibly.

Although party chat is really useful if not everyone's playing the same thing, it does get annoying in games like Left 4 Dead 2 or MW2's Team Tactical when no-one communicates or works as a team.

On the other hand, the amount of annoying idiots on Live can make for some funny arguments. Plus there's always the mute option.
