Deus Ex. From what I gather, Xcom is the figurative rape of a franchise whilst Human Revolution is awesome.

edit: Wait, not the new games? My bad. =P

Never played XCOM but the first Deus Ex is probably one of the best games ever made. Deus Ex is a hybrid RPG/FPS and ability to sneak/use stealth to avoid enemies often as well. Especially since the third one is coming out soon I would go with Deus Ex to see what all the fuss is about. =)

Seems pretty clear to me. Deus Ex. XCOM looks like it's just a shallow Mass Effect knockoff.

Edit: The new XCOM, not X-COM: UFO Defense.

I'd go with Deus Ex, even if it comes included with the infamous Invisible War. Honestly, out of that Xcom pack, the only good ones are the first (UFO Defense) and the second (Terror From The Deep). I'd advise you to buy those instead of the entire series and it's even cheaper.

As for the people saying that "Xcom is a shallow Mass Effect knockoff", we're talking about the same game, right?, the one that came in the nineties before 2K Games screwed it up forever?. Because if we do, then you're fucking out of your mind.

Deus Ex hasn't aged well graphically, but it has some of the very best gameplay ever. Plus, you'll want to know what all the fuss is about when the forum gets swamped with heated debates about Human Revolution in August.

No, you're not talking about the same game. The upcoming squad-based FPS XCOM is a Mass Effect knock-off.

OT: Dunno. Never played X-Com. But people are hailing it as a genuinely amazing example of strategy. And if the Deus Ex pack contains DE2....
I'm just happy that games I like are getting knockoffs. I've been jealous of FPS fans and their sea of choice for a while now.

Anyway, OP: Aren't both of the games really cheap? Like really, really cheap? Why not get both?

Go with Deus Ex. It's one of the best games I've ever played. It's incredibly ugly by today's standards, and it has some of the most hilariously bad voice acting (Hong Kong especially) in gaming history... but the gameplay is solid, and the story is pretty damn good (especially compared to all of the shallow stories that keep getting shoveled to us these days).

XCOM isn't bad either though. I was never able to get too deeply into it, I was always more a fan of Jagged Alliance 2 (especially with the fan 1.13 patch) when I wanted my squad-based strategy fix... but it was still a pretty fine game in its own right.

Honestly, for the prices on Steam right now, it probably wouldn't hurt to just give both a try since they're both classics that are worth far more than the current selling prices.

Edit: Well this is embarrassing. That will teach me to watch for periods.

But on topic, I'd recommend Dues Ex as well.

deus ex
x com is not really a good game if you lack nostalgia. plus only the first and second are good(the second being almost exactly like the first save for the scenario).

Apparently XCOM is pretty poor, and Deus Ex is brilliant, so I'd say Deus Ex no question.

Pretty much a summary of my thoughts.

Deus Ex is anything, but a Mass Effect knockoff. Especially since it came before Mass Effect. How can you knock off a series when your series style of gameplay preceded it?
Seems to me you might have missed a bit of punctuation in his post. If you re-read it, I'm sure you'll find it clearly states that XCOM is a Mass Effect ripoff, and not Deus Ex.
Now, the guy still deserves a slap for saying that, 'cus its a load of bull, but just thought I'd point it out :p

Deus Ex. No question about this one. That game is awesome, even to this day. I played it for the first time in March. :3
