Several people were shot and killed at my old university over something similarish to this.

So no, I wouldn't. I'd have guilt based nightmares (yes, I get those).

Yeah, I'd keep it.

I mean, afterall, the bank takes enough money off me in the form of bank fees.
Which you agreed to before you opened your account. It's not like they stole it from you in the same way you'd be stealing it from them.

If if they did, stealing money from someone isn't justified because they stole from you.
The point I was making is that, in this hypothetical situation, I'm stealing from the rich, not stealing from the poor (like Robin Hood if you will, only without the sharing of the wealth afterwards). That makes it not quite so bad (in my mind at least).

Or, to put it another way . . .

Banks steal hundreds of billions every year, fuck 'em.
Things like stealing are wrong regardless of who the victim is. This works morally and legally. If you got caught taking the ATM money and went to court, the court wouldn't go easy on you because the people you stole from had a lot of money. They'd prosecute you the same as if you took it from a single mom raising 4 kids and working two jobs.

And while stealing from the latter is a lot douchier than stealing from the former, it doesn't make it more wrong.

I'd either ignore it and move on, or call the ATM support number and let them know it's broken.

I'm being honest here, I'm much more likely to just leave it and hope someone else lets them know what's going on.

I'd be tempted to take the money for sure, but doubt I'd have the courage.

Is the cam in it working? If not, yes most likely, mainly because it's insured and wont actually hurt people, only companies, and well... bugger them.
So it's okay to steal from companies? Why?
It's not 'okay' it's simply less guilt inducing then stealing from a person with a face, someone you can empathise with... and well ATMs are run by fucking banks... give the utter shit they've pulled over the decades anything done to banks doesn't really bother me.

if you have put your card in they know who the last one was to access the machine and you would have to pay it back

I'd call the number of the company that owns it (usually on the ATM) or go intot he bank (if its outside a bank) and tell them that they're ATM is broken and return the money in the case of a bank, I'd ask them what to do in the case of an ATM away from a bank.

Wow, its amazing how many of you would be thieves given the oppurtunity. Sadly its not surprising that despite the banks listing their fees and charges AND you having the option of changing banks AND you signing and agreeing to the banks fee structures before you actually open the account so many of you have said it would be justified and the banks deserve to be stolen from.

For those short sighted amongst us who believe this would be a victimless crime and that because the money is insured no one loses at, think ahead... the banks pay insurance premiums, the more they claim on the insurance they higher the premiums go up, the bank won't let higher running costs cut into its profits so it will raise its fees/justify raising interest rates. Guess who ends up paying more because of your greed?

Honestly I'd probably not even realize anything was wrong. I'd just take the money not even realizing it was too much

If I was 100% sure I wouldn't be caught I would take it for sure. Otherwise though, I'd probably take it and then end up turning it in or something because I would be terrified of being caught. In the grand scheme of things, for a single person, morality isn't very practical.

I'd totally keep it! If it's the banks money, that is. If it come from someones bank account I definitely wouldn't.

Its being spit out by the ATM, how would you know if it was coming from someones account or not?

I'd take the money and report the ATM as broken.

I'm part of a local bank so I'd give it in.

I'd keep it in a second if I had a guarantee I wouldn't be caught.

The only doubt that would come into it would be my paranoia of being seen in another camera seeing the reflection off of someone's eyeball or something.

Without a guarantee and just knowing the one camera was broken? Depends on other factors like people in sight, other cameras in sight, amount of money etc.

Morality would never enter the equation as every single person has their own version or right and wrong and in MY version, it's fine to take a relatively small amount of money from multi-billion dollar corporation that has done nothing but steal and screw the country for the last decade.

First, just because we know about and agreed to the fees and whatnot doesn't mean they aren't bullshit thievery tactics.

Second, we're not talking about ripping the banks off for the insane amounts it would take to effect us. The hypothetical is 1 ATM and 1 person getting less than two hundred thousand dollars. The premiums aren't going to go up because of that.

Camera broken and no witnesses? Fuck yes, I'd keep the money. I'll let wealthier people worry about the morality of it. I need to pay rent.

Yes, definitely. Regardless of the amount, I'd take and keep the money. I don't really have a guilty conscience when it comes to this type of thing and, since no one's bank account is being tampered with, I'm not harming anyone. Then again, even if it was out of someone's account, I still think I'd keep it.

I am a poor university student and any extra cash is much appreciated.

I'd take the money.

Sure. There'd be no guilt to be had as it's not actually anyones money. Plus the banks took enough money anyway, I'd call it karmatically even. Even if it was Joe Bloggs money, he'd get reimbursed.

Even if the camera is working, what does it matter? All the ATMs I've ever used give the money out in a bundle all at once, not note by note. So, unless they've got some super HD camera capable of telling exactly how many notes were in the stack, and it also was looking over my shoulder and noticing how much I intended to withdraw, the chance of being caught is pretty well zero. Hell, even if there was a cop, standing right across the room, he'd still have to have some freakin' good vision to be able to read the screen from all the way over there, and again be able to determine how many notes came out at a glance.

So yeah, all mine.

Yes/Depends on amount.

If there was no way of getting caught and no crime would come upon me, then yes I would with a clear conscience, regardless of the amount.

If there was even a remote chance of being caught, I'd make sure I was out of view of any available surveillance, get a few bills and get out.
