Why do you think dragons are automatically part of the Greater Evil Force crew? Even in Skyrim, in which you play a guy who's purpose in life is to kill as many of them as possible, not all Dragons are evil.

I would personally like to summon the Spirit of Technological Advancement but whatever: Dragons, tentacles and shadows... or a Shadow Dragon with Tentacles. I can dig it...

Go with the pure shadowy mass. A shadowy dragon, tentacles or abberation is at least a tangible force to deal with, but you open up that portal and a wave of shadow starts pouring out...that's just plain terrifying, especially given how often that seems to be a precursor to something far, FAR worse.

As Terry Pratchett noted, the great tragedy of summoners is that by the time they've spent years poring over eldritch grimoires and poisoning themselves on mercury fumes in order to discover how to summon and control succubi etc, they've invariably forgotten what was meant to come next.
