I would try to return it in whatever way I could. If that didn't work, I would probably take it to a police station. $40000 dollars chilling in a back pack will more than likely belong to someone with drug affiliation. The last thing I want is a drug dealer gunning for me because I got a little greedy.

I'd give it to the police, and if nobody claims it within a certain period of time it's legally mine.
If I do get to keep it, I live off of it for the next three years.

Honestly, if there's no form of identification or anyway for me to find the original owner of the money, I'd probably just take it. But if the backpack was, say, left in front of my house or on top of my car or something I would turn it over the police.

I don't quite buy that a lot of people 'wouldn't keep the money' when a lot of people can't even stop contributing to the slaughter of millions upon millions of animals just because they taste good or because they look good. Or how about we talk about those children working in some sweatshop for pennies just so we can have a bunch of useless junk. Would I return it? Honestly, I believe it would depend on if the person deserved to even have such money.

Different debate entirely my friend.

I've been living in a tent in the garden of my parents house in a city I find soul-suckingly dull trying to find any work I can here or, ideally, elsewhere. I'd snap that cash up so I could rent a place in a new city and not have to worry about money for a while as I carry on looking for work. I'd be careful about spending it and avoid putting too much into a bank account and only using it for untrackable, barring rent and utilities, purchases (mostly essentials like food, maybe driving lessons, definitely gaming stuff).

I'd probably feel bad until I got a 40' TV with surround sound and a PS4.

Return it - 40k in cash? In a backpack? I'm trying to think of a way it could look more dodgy but I just can't come up with one... maybe if I find the bag within the hands of a drug lord?

No way I'm touching that - the police can have it. Maybe I'll get a lollypop from them.

Would I fuck over the type of people who carry $40,000 in cash? No, I don't think I would.

It's not like money occurs naturally, so obviously that money belongs to someone, someone who has a good reason, but also an illicit reason, for having such are large and exact amount of cash in a bag rather than in the bank.

If there was no way of quickly tracing the owners, i.e. something with their phone number in the bag so I can immediately tell them I'd found their money and arrange to return it (an address on it's own wouldn't be good enough because there's no way I'd risk running into the owners with their money unless I'd informed them I was returning it beforehand), then I'd just leave the bag where I found it and let it be someone else's problem - handing in potential drug money to the police probably isn't wise either, as it could easily be construed as a form snitching.

$40,000 isn't really a lot of money anyway, certainly not enough to risk my permanent well-being by taking it, although if I could definitely return it without any trouble or misunderstanding, then even a 0.5% finders fee would be a better result when you weight up the risk vs. reward.
This.

I've seen No Country For Old Men.

I leave that money alone, if I take anything? Maybe a thousand but I leave the rest.

My response would be

"BETTER CALL SAUL!"

Because there's a lot I could do with $40,000 to improve my wellbeing.

If not me, the next person who stumbles upon it would probably just take it for themselves anyway.

Screw your moral high-ground. I'm keeping it. I would put that shit towards a car and the deposit to my first home. No regrets.

Maybe a new PC.

If I saw the bag, I wouldn't go near it at first.

I would discreetly examine the area, checking for other people, CCTV, hidden cameras etc.

Then, as much as I hate to admit, I'd probably grab a fair amount of money and walk off with it. Making sure to only touch what I take, leaving no marks on the bag or remaining money.

Once I get home, I would check every single note for a form of tracking device. If none, keep the money and have a great time spending it.

No evidence left behind, only a portion of money taken, minuscule risk of being caught or hunted down. Win!

Obviously i would take it as my own since someone just left it wherever
How exactly would someone track me down?
Rather pointless thread

I haul ass home, and plan a new route home from wherever I was so I don't have to go that way again. I can think of a few reasons that much money would be lying around, and none of them are good.
Schmuck Bait: It's about as safe as a conspicuously untouched treasure chest.

It could be drug money, someone?s morgue payments, funds for an orphanage.

"... lots of that stuff is traceable if the authorities are given any reason to come sniffing at the recipient?s door."
-GMC p.28

Even if you play the Good Samaritan and hand it over to the authorities, there is no guarantee that they themselves will be honest. Especially if you come around and ask about what happened to the money and they then deny every receiving such an inordinate amount? and then overtly threaten you too leave and never come back asking.

Why call a lawyer like saul they will want a cut. Heres what you do, you take small amounts of cash (say $100) on several occasions to a casino. If you are unfortunate enough to live in a backwards country where gambling is illegal then i feel sorry for you. If anyone wonders why youve got all that cash then you use the gambling as an alibi. Make sure you bet on low risk stuff if you keep betting red or black youll statistically be giving up 50%

I would see if there is some sort of identification in the bag or something if not then take it to the police. If the police don't find the owner I guess it is mine which I would really appreciate cause it would help finance my game till I can finish and publish it.

I would say no i would keep it. However legally your meant to return it to the police. You can lay a claim with the police that if no one is able to claim ownership, that you should get it. Unless there is legislation in place that says police keep all unclaimed goods.

jup. 1.I dont knwo where the money is from-maybe its illegal earned or robbed-so I dont want to profit from that kind of shit. Or it might be connected to criminal stuff in other ways and while these "got money now got criminals biting me in my sweet ass"-movies are nice to watch, they might not be nice to live.
2. I would bring it back-if they dont find the owner after a certain time you get it, if they find them, they are obliged to compensate me a certain percentage of the worth if I remember correctly here. Even if not-it is not mine. I would feel bad to take that. Also I dont need it. While, yeah, money is nice because it can give you more possibilities, I dont "need" it to survive, while the person who lost it might. Because I dont know, I´d bring it back or call the police-even if I knew, I would not want it. Dont need it, its too much.
