I do not touch it. I do not even LOOK at it.
I haul ass home, and plan a new route home from wherever I was so I don't have to go that way again. I can think of a few reasons that much money would be lying around, and none of them are good.
I'm with this dude... there's almost no good outcomes from picking the damned thing up. There is a small chance you get to keep it if you turn it over to the police. Weighed up against the LARGE chance of some suited gorilla coming knocking at your door.

Pass.

Yeah, I'll be keeping that.

Let's think about this now, what sort of person needs to leave large amounts of money in secret places? Criminals! I think we're all better off with the money in the hands of me, Dave Daverson, mighty warrior of justice and professor of many sciences, than some random degenerate! D=

I'd keep it and put roughly 3-4 hundred away every 3 weeks so not to aleart the IRS that I have come across a large sum of cash.

I'd turn it over to the police, no matter how incompetent they might be,
I'm not risking my freedom/life just for money

Return it. Like others here, I would not want to mess with the kind of person most likely to walk around with 40K in cash.

For one thing; the resulting hospital bills might easily be higher than 40 000.

No one just loses $40,000. Someone would come looking for it so I would turn that in as quick as I possibly could.

Well I would be fairly concerned that it might be counterfeit so I would turn it into the police. If it's not and no one comes along that can prove that it's theirs then I'm pretty sure I get to keep it.(or most of it at least)

I'd turn it in. I don't care if it's drug money or not. Don't care if it is legally gained money or not. It's a lot of money that does not belong to me, and I'm not a thief.

$40,000 is enough for me to live off of for at least four years.
I don't think I'd return it.

I'd ultimately spend it day by day. Not put it in the bank or make large purchases with it.
Just take a few bills with me every time I get groceries and use it to pay the rent.

What little money I earn from my job would go to savings and continue to pay my online bills as normal.

Thats like £26k so its about a years wage. Too right im gonna take it. Chances are if you have that much in cash you are (as my mum would say) "up to no good"

For all I know, that backpack was purposefully left there to make a payment for some sort of shady or desperate deal. I'd be hard-pressed to leave my fingerprints on it, let alone take it and keep it. I might stand next to it and call the cops, though.

Yes.

It's 40K, of course im gonna keep it. Just a few things. First, pick it up and check if you can find any form of ID. Then, check around for any hidden camera's, you know from one of those secret reality shots where they want to see if people would return the cash.

If i cant find an ID, and there are no hidden camera's around (ie, i don't get caught) I walk home 40K richer.

And i'll probably spend it about right away. Get my drivers licence, few games. Keep a 5 grand separate for when i need a new gaming rig in the future. And some more fun stuff.

Step 1: Take a quick look around for anyone suspicious
Step 2: Nonchalantly shoulder the backpack full of cash and take it home. Make sure you're not followed.
Step 3: remove the money from the backpack. Deposit and spend at your leisure.
Step 4: Destroy the backpack and any evidence linking you to wherever you found the backpack

So, I would keep the money, but not out of greed. I would give 30,000 to charity, and keep the remaining 10,000 as a back up fund.

I would keep it and wait.

If no problems follow up after waiting for quite a while (a few years or so), then I would probably invest and save.

I'd keep it, I have a lot of debts that need paying, and I'm like 8 years late on my education due to financial bullshit, and minimum wage ain't gonna pay for that without a little bit o help.

Depends on my mood, and the location i discover it in. If i were to stumble upon it in my current neighborhood, I'm withdrawing a finders fee (up to 80%) and kicking the rest into the street. If i were to discover it on my way to work. Its mine. During the day at work if i hear talking about it or someone talking about having misplaced something, i'd nonchalantly ask how much they 'misplaced' and ask them whereabouts they last saw it (most of my co-workers know i walk to work, so there'd be no suspicion)

Honestly my moral urges tell me to turn it in to the proper authorities, but lately you can't trust any of these jerk-offs anymore.
